Maarten Schmidt was a Dutch-born American astronomer. He is best known as the first astronomer to identify a quasar. He was also the first to measure the distances between quasars. He was born in Groningen, Netherlands on December 28, 1929. He studied math and physics and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Groningen in 1949. In 1950, he earned his master's degree from the same university. In 1956, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy from Leiden Observatory. He emigrated to the United States in 1959 to work at the California Institute of Technology. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the Helen B. Warner Prize in 1964, and the Kavli Prize in Astrophysics, along with Donald Lynden-Bell, in 2008. In March 1966, he was featured on the cover of Time magazine. Maarten Schmidt died in Fresno, California on September 17, 2022 at the age of 92.
