S. E. Hinton became a literary sensation at the age of seventeen with the publication of her first novel, The Outsiders. She wrote the novel because she was running out of books to read, and she couldn't find stories that dealt with the reality of what teenagers were experiencing. Even now, over thirty years later, young readers are still reading The Outsiders. Not many books have that sort of staying power. Hinton went on to write four other novels and two books for younger children, and she worked closely with director Francis Ford Coppola on the movie versions of her novels Rumblefish and The Outsiders. There is very little written on S. E. Hinton and this biography helps fill the gap by taking a look at the life and work of this interesting author.
