Ma Xiangbo and the Mind of Modern China 1840-1939
Ma Xiangbo was one of the most prominent Catholic thinkers in modern China, his life spanning the tumultuous century from 1840 to 1939. A political figure, religious believer, educator and founder of three universities, he left a profound legacy in all of these arenas of life and thought during the late Qing and the Republican eras. This in-depth study of Ma's life and thought includes three lengthy essays covering different facets of Ma's life and work: Statesman and Centenarian: Ma Xiangbo as Witness of China's Early Modernity by Zhu Weizheng, Christianity and Cultural Conflict in the Life of Ma Xiangbo by Li Tiangang, and Standing Between Two Worlds: Ma Xiangbo's Educational Thought and Practice by Lu Yongling. It also contains translations of nine important articles by Ma Xiangbo and a full Chinese bibliography of related publications, letters, and commentaries.
