What is Philosophy? This work examines what it means to be a philosopher and attacks the sterility of modern philosophy. Philosophy, the authors insist, is not contemplation, reflection or communication, but the creation of concepts. Part One explores the nature and scope of philosophy and its relation to social and economic development. It explores the concept, the plane of immanence in which it can be born and the conceptual personae which activate it. It concludes with an account of philsophy's relation to social and economic development, from ancient Greece to the modern capitalist state. Part Two sets out to illuminate the distinctiveness of philosophy by considering other forms of thought: science, art, literature and music. |

Pagina 225 - Two men, who pull the oars of a boat, do it by an agreement or convention, tho' they have never given promises to each other.
Pagina 15 - There are no simple concepts. Every concept has components and is defined by them. It therefore has a combination [chiffre]. It is a multiplicity, although not every multiplicity is conceptual. There is no concept with only one component. Kven the first concept, the one with which a philosophy "begins...
Pagina 118 - To slow down is to set a limit in chaos to which all speeds are subject, so that they form a variable determined as abscissa, at the same time as the limit forms a universal constant that cannot be gone beyond (for example, a maximum degree of contraction).
Pagina 5 - What dawns on philosophers last of all: they must no longer accept concepts as a gift, nor merely purify and polish them, but first make and create them, present them and make them convincing.
Pagina 59 - Perhaps this is the supreme act of philosophy: not so much to think THE plane of immanence as to show that it is there, unthought in every plane, and to think it in this way as the outside and inside of thought, as the non-exrernal outside and the non-inrernal inside — that which cannot be thought...
Pagina 46 - Beginning with Descartes, and then with Kant and Husserl, the cogito makes it possible to treat the plane of immanence as a field of consciousness. Immanence is supposed to be immanent to a pure consciousness, to a thinking subject.
Pagina 112 - I do not know what meaning classical studies could have for our time if they were not untimely — that is to say, acting counter to our time and thereby acting on our time and, let us hope, for the benefit of a time to come.
Pagina 27 - Is there one plane that is better than all the others, or problems that dominate all others? Nothing at all can be said on this point. Planes must be constructed and problems posed, just as concepts must be created.
Pagina 41 - Precisely because the plane of immanence is prephilosophical and does not immediately take effect with concepts, it implies a sort of groping experimentation and its layout resorts to measures that are not very respectable, rational or reasonable. These measures belong to the order of dreams, of pathological processes, esoteric experiences, drunkenness, and excess.
