Fortifications are among the most layered expressions of architectural heritage. They are complex systems deeply rooted in cities and territories, shaping their spatial forms and hierarchies. Their understanding requires a multi-scale approach, ranging from the territorial and urban dimensions to the construction level and material details, in which architecture serves as a hinge. The contributions in the volumes of the "Defensive Architecture of the Mediterranean" series offers a broad overview of research on fortifications, highlighting the richness and complexity of the subject. The books highlight the importance of applying an interdisciplinary approach capable of bringing together historical, architectural, engineering, archaeological, and landscape perspectives, raising issues of knowledge, conservation, and management nature. The Rome edition of FORTMED 2026, besides the consolidated issues, emphasize conservation as a critical synthesis between historical knowledge, material analysis, and architectural design. Digital processes of 3D surveying, modelling and representation lead to interpretation and informed intervention, facilitating the heritage management. Hosted in Rome, where walls are still part of the lived urban thresholds, FORTMED 2026 reaffirms the role of fortified heritage as an active agent in the present.

Informazioni sull'autore (2026)

Michele Russo, graduated in Architecture from the University of Ferrara in 2002, qualified as an architect, he obtained his PhD from the Politecnico di Milano in 2007, with a thesis on the integration of 3D acquisition methods. As a research fellow and then a TD researcher at the Politecnico di Milano and the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa for eight years, he explored topics such as geometry, colour, surveying, modelling and representation in different fields of application, developing optimised methodologies for the reconstruction of “reality-based” and “interpretative” models. In 2016, he gained a Senior TD Researcher position and, in 2019, an Associate Professor role at the Department of History, Design and Restoration of Architecture at Sapienza University of Rome. Qualified as a Full Professor in 2021, he is a reviewer for international journals and conferences and author of proceedings, journal articles and essays in the field of 3D imaging and digital representation. In recent years, he has focused on experimentation in Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence. He is co-founder and secretary of the Representation Advances And CHallenges Association - REAACH (www.reaach.eu) and co-chair of the annual symposium.

E’ co-fondatore e segretario dell’Associazione Representation Advances And CHallenges - REAACH (www.reaach.eu) e e co-chair del simposio annuale.

Marta Acierno, Architect and PhD in Architectural Conservation, she is Associate Professor at the Department of History, Drawing and Restoration of Architecture at Sapienza University of Rome, where she teaches Elements of Restoration and is a member of the doctoral board in History and Restoration of Architecture. She has held institutional roles at the UNESCO Office of the Italian Ministry of Culture and has served as architect within the Technical Office of the French Embassy in Rome. Her research focuses on the study of medieval architecture, with particular attention to southern Lazio and Campania, on the processes of heritagization of historic prisons, and on the relationship between contemporary architecture and architectural conservation. More recently, including within nationally funded research projects (PRIN), she has explored the development of digital ontologies as tools for the formalisation of the architectural conservation process. She is the author of numerous essays and monographs and collaborates with national and international scholarly journals in the field of architectural conservation.
