4 Anoint them kings! Aye, kingly kings, O Lord!

Anoint them with the Spirit of thy Son: Theirs not a jeweled crown, a bloodstained sword;

Theirs, by sweet love, for Christ a kingdom won.

5 Make them apostles! Heralds of thy cross,

Forth may they go to tell all realms thy grace:

Inspired of thee, may they count all but loss,

And stand at last with joy before thy face.

60 mighty age of prophet-kings, return!
O truth, O faith, enrich our urgent time!
Lord Jesus Christ, again with us sojourn:
A weary world awaits thy reign sublime!
Amen.

Denis Wortman, 1884

EVIVE thy work, O Lord,

Thy mighty arm make bare;

S.M.

Speak with the voice that wakes the dead
And make thy people hear.

2 Revive thy work, O Lord,
Disturb this sleep of death;
Quicken the smouldering embers now
By thine almighty breath.

3 Revive thy work, O Lord,

Create soul thirst for thee;

And hungering for the Bread of life,
O may our spirits be!

4 Revive thy work, O Lord,
Exalt thy precious Name;
And, by the Holy Ghost, our love
For thee and thine inflame.

5 Revive thy work, O Lord,

And give refreshing showers; The glory shall be all thine own, The blessing, Lord, be ours.

Amen.

Albert Midlane, 1858

E Christian heralds, go, proclaim
Salvation in Emmanuel's Name:
To distant climes the tidings bear,
And plant the Rose of Sharon there.

2 God shield you with a wall of fire,
With holy zeal your hearts inspire,
Bid raging winds their fury cease,
And calm the savage breast to peace.

L.M.

3 And when our labours all are o'er,
Then may we meet to part no more,
Meet, with the ransomed throng to fall,
And crown the Saviour Lord of all. Amen.

THOU who makest souls to shine With light from brighter worlds above, And droppest glistening dew divine On all who seek a Saviour's love;

2 Do thou thy benediction give

On all who teach, on all who learn, That so thy Church may holier live, And every lamp more brightly burn.

3 Give those that teach pure hearts and wise, Faith, hope, and love, all warmed by

prayer:

Themselves first training for the skies,

They best will raise their people there.

4 Give those that learn the willing ear,
The spirit meek, the guileless mind;
Such gifts will make the lowliest here
Far better than a kingdom find.

5 O bless the shepherd, bless the sheep,
That guide and guided both be one,
One in the faithful watch they keep
Until this hurrying life be done.

6 If thus, good Lord, thy grace be given,
Our glory meets us ere we die;
Before we upward pass to heaven
We taste our immortality. Amen.

John Armstrong, 1847

OME, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire,
And lighten with celestial fire.

[ocr errors]

2 Thou the anointing Spirit art,
Who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.

3 Thy blessed unction from above Is comfort, life, and fire of love.

4 Enable with perpetual light

The dullness of our blinded sight.

5 Anoint and cheer our soilèd face With the abundance of thy grace.

8.8

6 Keep far our foes, give peace at home: Where thou art guide, no ill can come.

7 Teach us to know the Father, Son, And thee of both to be but One,

8 That, through the ages all along,
This may be our endless song

9 Praise to thy eternal merit,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

YE

Latin; Tr. John Cosin, 1627

E servants of the Lord,
Each in your office, wait,
Observant of his heavenly word,
And watchful at his gate.

2 Let all your lamps be bright,
And trim the golden flame;
Gird up your loins as in his sight,
For aweful is his Name.

3 Watch! 'tis your Lord's command,
And while we speak he's near;
Mark the first signal of his hand,
And ready all appear.

4 O happy servant he

In such a posture found;

He shall his Lord with rapture see,
And be with honour crowned.

8.7.8.7.8.7

HRIST is made the sure foundation,
Christ the head and corner-stone,

Chosen of the Lord, and precious,
Binding all the Church in one;
Holy Sion's help for ever,

And her confidence alone.

2 All that dedicated city,

Dearly loved of God on high,
In exultant jubilation

Pours perpetual melody;
God the One in Three adoring
In glad hymns eternally.

3 To this temple, where we call thee,
Come, O Lord of Hosts, to-day;
With thy wonted loving-kindness,
Hear thy servants as they pray;
And thy fullest benediction

Shed within its walls alway.

4 Here vouchsafe to all thy servants
What they ask of thee to gain,
What they gain from thee, for ever
With the blessèd to retain,
And hereafter in thy glory

Evermore with thee to reign. Amen.
