Brightest and Best

JOHN BACCHUS DYKES

2

Cold on His cradle the dew-drops are shining;

Low lies His head with the beasts of the stall;
Angels adore Him in slumber reclining,
Maker and Monarch and Saviour of all.

3

Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion,
Odors of Edom and offerings divine,

Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean,
Myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine?

4

Vainly we offer each ample oblation;

Vainly with gifts would His favor secure:

Richer by far is the heart's adoration;

Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

5

Brightest and best of the sons of the morning!
Dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid!
Star of the East, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our Infant Redeemer is laid! Amen.

He is here, Whom seers in old time chanted of, while ages ran;
Whom the writings of the prophets promised since the world began:
Then foretold, now manifested to receive the praise of man

Evermore and evermore.

3

O that ever-blessed birthday, when the Virgin, full of grace,
Of the Holy Ghost incarnate bare the Saviour of our race;

And that Child, the world's Redeemer, first displayed His sacred face,
Evermore and evermore.
4

Praise Him, O ye heavens of heavens! Praise Him, angels in the height!
Every power and every virtue sing the praise of God aright:

Let no tongue of man be silent, let each heart and voice unite,

Evermore and evermore. Amen.

O Little Town of Bethlehem

RAYMOND HUNTINGTON WOODMAN

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

tle town of Beth-le-hem, How still we see thee lie!

Above thy deep and dream-less sleep The

silent stars go by.

bbb

Yet in thy dark streets shin- eth The ev - er - lasting Light;

The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee to-night. A-men. b

2

O morning stars, together

Proclaim the holy birth!

And praises sing to God the King,

And peace to men on earth. For Christ is born of Mary;

And gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep

Their watch of wondering love.

3

How silently, how silently,

The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heaven. No ear may hear His coming; But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive Him still, The dear Christ enters in.
