THE meanness of venal praise is a proposition too self-evident to require either argument or illustration; yet instances still occur even in this enlightened and liberal age, and those, unfortunately, not rare, of silly ambition craving it, and these inseparable attendants of the unfriended scholar obliging him to bestow it.
