The author was educated at Oxford, and left there owing to the plague. Being a Non-Conformist, he avoided persecution by fleeing to Massachusetts in 1637, and remained at Lynn with his colleague, Whiting, until 1656, when he became pastor of the First Church of Ipswich, where he died.
