FINE SIGNATURE. After the victory at Yorktown, and the knowledge that peace was near, there was not much fighting in 1782. Washington, however, thought this no reason why his officers should be allowed too much leave of absence: "I must therefore consider the indulgence given to you for the purpose, as limited to eight weeks from the date hereof.

228. WHITNEY (ELI-maker of the Cottin Gin). The lower portion of a letter, with fine signature, and superscription in Whitney's hand. With 12mo, engraved portrait. (As 1 piece.)

It is not perhaps generally known that had it not been for Catherine Greene, the wife of Nathanael Green, the cotton-gin might never have been invented. She gave Whitney the use of her basement for more than a year for his experiments, and encouraged him and supported him during the time.
