Charlevoix went to Canada in 1705. In 1721-22 he ascended the St. Lawrence, made his way to the Mississippi through the Lakes, and descended that river to New Orleans. 28 maps are included, comprising Louisiana, Acadia, Newfoundland, Hudson's Bay, Mouth of the Mississippi, plans of Port Royal, Louisbourg, New Orleans, Quebec, etc. A separate treatise is on the plants of New France, illustrated by 44 plates engraved on 22 sheets. An important part is the preliminary list of books relating to Canada and Louisiana, with critical remarks on them, including Creuxius, Le Clercq, Denys, Laudonniere, Herrera, Ramusio, Cartier, Champlain, etc., etc.

A fine copy of the rare original edition, with the written initials of Louis Crespel guaranteeing the copy on page 11. Only a very small number of this first edition was printed, mainly for the friends of the family, and in order that the genuine copies should be distinguished from any attempts to issue fraudulent copies, the brother signed these with his initials. Père E. Crespel was wrecked on the Island of Anticosti in 1737, and remained there for several months, when he was rescued by Indians, most of his companions dying. A graphic description is given of Indian customs, he being present at the torture of two prisoners.

Fine copy of this scarce book. Father Ducreux founded it entirely on the various narratives sent to France by the Jesuit missionaries, so that it might almost be considered as a history of the Jesuits in Canada, accompanied by a description of the
