Notes on time of the year when the wild quadrupeds about Concord brought forth their young. The observations cover the years 1850 to 1858. Written on the back of a 4to letter to Thoreau's father. 442. Do. Written in ink on both sides of an 8vo sheet of paper. General nature notes for March, 1859. Some of them are: "Bluebirds in Worcester, Mar. 24-generally arrive in C. Mar. 7." "Robins a week or more ago › Feb. 25. "A red wing (see and hear) [Mch.] 11. "Little ants stirring and ready to come out, 21. Many out 25." "Garfield saw a woodcock a fortnight ago. Minot think the mid. of Mar. as early as they come & then do not begin to lay." Intensely interesting notes, affording a glimpse into Thoreau's manner of working. These rough nature notes were afterward worked up in his journal. 443. Do. Written in pencil on both sides of a letter to Thoreau asking him to testify in a suit in which his aunts were plaintiffs. The letter is dated Oct. 5, 1859. The notes appear to have reference to the Harper's Ferry raid. The great interest taken by Thoreau in the fate of John Brown is well attested. Some of the notes are as follows: "Christ & Brown." A gov. with a vig. com. behind it." "What Mass. sends Senators to C. for. "Prefers to be hung." "Attitude of newspapers and parties. "Some ministers doing their duty." 66 "" 99 444. Do. Headed "Verdure," and written in ink on both sides of an Svo sheet. Rough notes, for the most part on the growth of the grasses, covering a period of several years. Some of them are: "May 16-57. Grass showing itself above water in meadow. May 15-60. Some winter rye 2 feet high." May 12-59. Green in river meadows prevailing over the brown." "May 5-54. Grassy season begins." "" 66 66 These notes show the closeness of Thoreau's observations. They should prove of much greater interest to admirers of Thoreau than ordinary letters-and his letters are scarce.
