SCHOOL LAW

By THOMAS E. FINEGAN, M. A., Chief of the Law Division of State Education Department NEARLY one-half of this book has just been rewritten, so that the book has been revised to date. The appendix contained in the old edition and all dead matter have been eliminated. The book now contains all live law and such law is incorporated in its proper place in the book.

It is written especially to meet the wants of school officers and teachers and treats clearly and comprehensively the questions which they must meet daily in their work.

It is used as a text-book in nearly all of the state normal schools and in a large number of the training classes.

It contains over 400 pages, is printed on good paper in clear type, is well bound, and has a complete topical index.

Trustees have authority under the law to purchase this book and pay for it from the funds of the district. It then becomes the property of the district. Many boards of trustees purchase a sufficient number of copies to put one in the hands of each member of the board, the clerk and the principal.

THE PUBLISHER'S PAGE

T

A Forward Movement

HE June number of AMERICAN EDUCATION Comes to you with a new cover and sixteen extra pages. This has been made possible by circumstances of slight interest to you, perhaps, but of considerable importance to the publishers. However, we hope to arouse your interest by confiding to you some of our plans for the future.

For a long time we have observed that certain phases of education have not been presented in the educational press as fully or intelligently as their importance demanded, and that educational magazines generally have kept within rather narrow limits. Education at the beginning of the twentieth century is of wide range, touching not only the school but the home, the church and life itself. We repeat the words of our title, AMERICAN EDUCATION, and find it is broad enough to cover the whole field and so we have undertaken a forward movement and hope to make the magazine exactly what it is in name, a magazine devoted to educational progress, investigation, discussion and inspiration, national in character and distinguished by breadth and depth of view, a magazine that will be appreciated by parents and all those indirectly interested in education as well as by teachers and school officials.

The Contents

A brief summary of the field we are planning to cover includes the presentation of concrete pedagogical problems, articles covering the best thought on the principles, psychology and philosophy of education, moral and religious education at school and in the home, papers on school architecture and decoration of the school room, the presentation of the results of child study investigations, professional articles on the teaching of English, mathematics, science and manual training.

Under the "Best to Be Found" will be given choice extracts from magazines, superintendents' reports, etc., and abstracts of important educational articles.

There will also be comprehensive reviews of the most worthy books on education as published.

As nearly all educators desire to keep in touch with the educational progress of the country, the news features of the magazine will be continued and improved.

No Increase in Subscription Price

Although the cost of production has increased, the subscription price of AMERICAN EDUCATION will remain One Dollar a year, as the publishers wish to place the magazine within the reach of every teacher who is anxious to advance in the profession.

As the present subscribers can be of much assistance in extending the circulation of AMERICAN EDUCATION, the publishers have decided to give them an opportunity to renew their subscriptions at a special rate, provided the renewals are accompanied by at least one new subscription. By sending 75 cents to pay for one new subscription for one year, you can secure your own renewal at the same rate.

Or if you wish to become an agent for AMERICAN EDUCATION in your vicinity you are invited to communicate with the publishers immediately concerning rates and prizes.

An earnest, energetic teacher is wanted to represent this magazine at every teachers' institute or summer school. Also agents are wanted for city work. Much of the best territory is yet unassigned.

Our Library Offer

During the year a great many orders have been received for the Macmillan Pedagogical Library, advertised on another page. This offer is to be withdrawn on September first and therefore our readers are advised to purchase a set in combination with one year's subscription to AMERICAN EDUCATION before the time expires. No up-to-date teacher should be without this valuable library.

Outlines of English Masterpieces

The teachers of English will be glad to learn that Mr. Bailey's "Outlines of English Masterpieces" will be continued in AMERICAN EDUCATION next fall. These will include Shakespeare's Macbeth, Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar, which will complete the series required by the college entrance board. There will also be seven other outlines of literature texts required for academic work.

There have been so many calls for the outlines of Ivanhoe and The Lady of the Lake, which were printed in the magazine last year, the numbers of which are now out of print, that the publishers will put them out in booklet form under one cover, next September. The price will be fifteen cents per copy. Teachers are advised to send their orders in advance as only a limited edition will be printed.

Self Help Arithmetic Cards

Seventh and eighth grade teachers will find the Self-Help Arithmetic Cards published by New York Education Co., just the thing for review purposes. The set contains 50 lessons with 288 problems covering the whole subject, a complete lesson on each card with answers to the lesson preceding. To introduce them one set will be sent to any address on receipt of 15 cents. Regular price 25 cents.

Examination Questions

Realizing the importance of examinations for teachers certificates, entrance to colleges, the selection of candidates to fill positions in the State and National Civil Service, and review work in schools, the editors of AMERICAN EDUCATION are compiling a book of authentic questions and answers selected from many sources and covering all the subjects usually required for such purposes. The book will be comprehensive and up-todate in every respect. Every question used has been asked on some State or United States examination paper within recent years. Everything obsolete has been omitted. Besides 5,000 or more questions and answers on over 30 different subjects the book will include chapters on such topics as How to Prepare for Teachers' and Civil Service Examinations, How to Write an Examination Paper, etc. The book will be issued early in the fall at One Dollar per copy. Correspondence invited.

Our Advertisers

The attention of our readers is called to the advertisements not only of New York Education Co., but of all publishers and others who are represented in the advertising pages of this number. We guarantee the reliability of every advertisement and request you to state that you saw the advertisement in AMERICAN EDUCATION When you answer any of them.
