THE

EDITORIAL NOTE.

HE past year has shown continued growth in all art interests throughout the country; the average quality of work has been higher and the sales in excess of former years.

In this, the second issue of the AMERICAN Art Annual, the special feature is the addition of a quarterly diary including the principal events of the art world as far as announced up to October 10th, 1899. This feature is sure to appeal to artists and those in any way connected with art matters.

The Editor has endeavored, in the part devoted to reports of Museums and Art Societies, to give the important events of the season of 1898-1899 as shown by the latest annual report of each society. The arrangement is in alphabetical order according to cities, and where an article is somewhat more complete it is because the secretary of the society has prepared a fuller report.

The list of officers is only given when there has been a change during the year, and an asterisk (*) is used to indicate, "see 1898 issue of the AMERICAN ART ANNUAL for officers and account of the foundation and growth of the society." The 1898 and 1899 issues (price $3.00) form a complete record of the present art interests of the country, including directories of Painters, Sculptors, Illustrators, Museums, Societies, Schools and Dealers.

The work has been indorsed by the leading artists and receives the support of the principal art societies throughout the country, such as the Metropolitan Museum and the National Academy of Design.

We take this opportunity of thanking our subscribers for their encouragement and hope that they will continue to help the work by spreading the knowledge thereof.

THE AMERICAN ART ANNUAL will be published in November of each year and will contain reports of the art interests of the United States and Canada for the past season, Directories of Artists and other matter of interest to all who wish to keep posted on current art.

The DIARIES will be issued in January, May and September and will give announcements for the following four months.

Subscriptions for the four issues, three dollars ($3.00). SEND YOUR SUBSCRIPTIONS AND REMITTANCES BEFORE JANUARY 1st, 1900, IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE NEXT DIARY.

This, 1899 issue, price Twenty-Five Cents.
