Legs (figs. 74 & 75). All femora and coxæ reticulated; femora I and II clavate, with slender basis, one stout hairy bristle dorsally in the distal 1/3 and one fine tactile hair ventrally. Genua I and II short, with very stout, hairy dorsal bristle and two ventral bristles. Tibia slender, widening slightly towards the top and curved a little downwards, fused with tarsus without any constriction or articulation. Tarsus tapering towards the top, short, with 6-8 short hairs. Claws fairly stout.

Legs III and IV with rounded femora, tapering towards the end, with thin ventral horizontal blades of even width, pointed at the top. Tibia and tarsus very slender, longer than in legs I and II, the tarsus being bent slightly upwards.

Loc.: Described from dry specimens collected in the following places: Juan Fernandez, Masatierra, Rabanal, c. 300 m. s. m. among dry leaves in dense forest, Aug. 1917; in the bottom of the Gabanal Quebrada ca. 100 m. s. m. among dry leaves. Figs. 76-82.

Length 680-700 p, width 480-500 p.

Colour dirty greyish-brown. Texture dull, granulated by small semisphærical projections.

Propodosoma (fig. 80) sloping downwards steeply towards the end (so that its structure can only be seen when this part is dissected). Lamellæ broad, of even width, almost horizontal, converging towards the top. Lamellar hairs short, slightly curved, inserted a short distance behind the cusps, which are short and triangular. Rostral hairs longer than the lamellar hair, inserted unusually far backwards between the anterior end of the lamellæ. Interlamellar hairs very long, about half as long as the dorsal hairs of the hysterosoma.

Fig. 76. Cepheus crinitus n. sp.

Pseudostigmata long, tube-shaped, completely coalesced with the base of the lamellæ but projecting a little beyond their edge. Pseudostigmatic organs slender, slightly S-curved, with lanceolate heads, covered with fine, raised points (fig. 81).

Mouthparts (fig. 77). Hypostome large, pentagonal, with rounded angles, with one pair of small hairs far forward. The palps to mutilated for an investigation.

Hysterosoma (fig. 76) quite as broad as it is long, with acute anterolateral angles, paralell sides and posteriorly broadly rounded; dorsal side only gently arched. Hairs very long, curved, arranged in two longitudinal rows of

5 pairs near the centre, 5 pairs between the median row and the margin of the body and 4 pairs of marginal hairs.

Ventral side (fig. 82). Sternum broad, with well developed apodemata between epimera I and II and II and III; between epimera III and IV they do not reach the sternum. Epimera I with two pairs of hairs, II with one pair, III with 3 pairs and IV with 3 pairs, placed as fig. 82 shows. Hind margin of epimera IV thickened to straight ridges running obliquely backward towards the posterior margin of coxa IV.

Genital aperture longer than wide, almost rectangular, with 4 pairs of

hairs; anal aperture wider and more rounded, situated close to the posterior margin and as far from the genital aperture as its own length.

Legs. Legs I and II (fig. 79) with clavate femora with thin ventral edge and two stout dorsal bristles in the distal 1/3; genu short, curved, with stout dorsal bristle, one dorsal perpendicular tactile hair, one ventral bristle and one hair exteriorly. Tibia clavate, widening from a very slender base towards the top where it is widest and coalesced, apparently without any movable joint, with the tarsus which is almost pyriform in outline and has numerous but short hairs; claws stout.

Legs II (fig. 78) and IV with flattened femora, with ventral narrow thin blade; tibia and tarsus of the same shape as in legs I and II but longer.

Length 710 p, width 500 x; length of proterosoma 230 p.
Colour dirty greyish brown.
Texture.

Propodosoma (fig. 84) of the same general shape as in C. crinitus, as are also the lamellæ, which are, however, united by a narrow translamella. The interlamellar hairs are short but stout and slightly serrated as the hairs of the hysterosoma. Lamellar hairs short, pointed, curved inwards and inserted on the dorsal edge of the lamellæ at the base of the cusps which are of the same shape as in C. crinitus. Rostral hairs of the same size as the lamellar hairs, inserted in front of the translamella. Rostrum blunt, with a median rounded depressed area.

The semispherical projections are larger than in C. crinitus and in the posterior part there are about 12 circular depressed areas.

Pseudostigmata large, tube-shaped, fused with the base of the lamellæ. Pseudostigmatic organs slightly s-curved, with lanceolate heads, covered with fine raised points.

Mouthparts. Hypostome (fig. 83) of the same general shape as in C. crinitus but comparatively shorter and broader.

Hysterosoma (fig. 85) with well developed shoulder, sloping gently downwards towards the posterior margin, where there are about 30 circular There are two longitudinal rows of short but stout and slightly serrated blunt bristles, one median row of 5 pairs and one lateral row of 4 pairs; besides there is one shoulder bristle, three pairs at the posterior margin and one pair further ventrally near the median line.

Ventral side (fig. 86) of almost the same shape as in C. crinitus; thus the apodemata between epimera III and IV do not reach the sternum and the hind margin of epimera IV is thickened to a ridge.

Anal aperture longer than wide, almost rectangular, almost twice as long as the genital aperture, from which it is removed as much as its own length.

Width of propodosoma 270 p, width of hysterosoma 540 p.

Colour light brown.

90. Ventral view.

Propodosoma (fig. 89) in the posterior third with parallel sides, rostrum triangular with straight sides and rounded at the top, the entire length being equal to the distance between the acetabula I.

There are no ridges, crests or projections of any kind on the propodosoma. The interlamellar hairs are almost perpendicular, finely pointed and rather short, inserted near the pseudostigmata and on a level with them, twice as far apart as the distance to the lamellar hairs.

Lamellar hairs longer than interlamellar hairs, directed straight forwards close to the surface, inserted a little behind the middle and close together; rostral hairs small.
