Corruption and Democracy in Thailand
This book is the result of a major research study on corruption, set in its political context. It covers estimates of the amounts involved; the roles of politicians, business people, bureaucrats, and police; the political background and impact; popular attitudes on corruption; and potential counter-measures. The publication of the original research prompted a political storm. Both inside and outside of Thailand, this work is recognized as a landmark study.

In this chapter we are concerned with the provincial variant of jao pho and their
followers. They come from all regions of the country. Their origins and activities
are immensely diverse. Our main concern however is with jao pho or phu mi ...
in this period, the jao pho were able to acquire weapons for arming their
followers. Such links between jao pho and military men became significantly
stronger in the 1980s in several ways. First, one group in the military, headed by
pho but also in their style of operation and their impact on politics. In the central
region, the provinces of Samut Prakarn, Chonburi, Nonthaburi, Angthong,
Pathumthani, Petchburi and Prachinburi have reputations as the seat of jao pho.
