PREFACE.

AT the close of the ninth volume, the Editor thinks it to be necessary for him only to request that his correspondents will accept his sincere thanks for their valuable assistance, and that they will continue to afford it to him as liberally as they have hitherto afforded it.

The Publisher has a more painful task to perform. He has again to apologize, for the whole of the plates not having been delivered. To explain all the causes which have occasioned the delay in bringing forward the engravings would be tiresome to his readers. He can, however, with truth, assure the public, that the delay, far from being voluntary on his part, has been to him a source of daily and great vexation, and that to avoid it he has spared no exertion. The plates which are
