Through Columbia Records

HOUSANDS of schools in America close their doors each afternoon. Other schools are open day and night. They not only bring together the young people of the community, but they are bringing the community spirit to old and young alike.

Columbia Records hold almost endless possibilities for community and classroom work, with their Rote Songs, Rhythmic Play, Folk Songs and Folk Dances, Penmanship, Music Appreciation, Correlation with History, Geography, Literature, and Ensemble Singing.

One of the surest and most natural methods of developing a spirit of mutual understanding among people everywhere is by Community Singing. This is with the New Columeasy bia Band Accompaniment Records that get everybody singing the minute they start to play. You no longer need a piano, an accompanist, or a leader.

THE PRINCIPLES OF POLITICS, an Introduction to the Study of the Evolution of Political Ideals, by A. R. Lord, M. A., professor of philosophy in the Rhodes University College, Grahamstown, South Africa. This book attempts to present a scientific criticism and exposition of political principles within the grasp of young students undertaking the study of political philosophy. Sir Frederick Pollock's brilliant lectures on the "History of Political Science" and Doctor Bosanquet's "Philosophical Theory of the States," the two leading authorities in this field are usually found too difficult and subtle for the students entering upon this field of study for the first time. This volume is intended as an introductory treatise to prepare the student for a fuller appreciation of the above mentioned authorities. The questions of the proper structure sphere and functions of the state, and the rights and duties

WEBSTER'S EFFECTIVE ENGLISH EXPRESSION

with some care. The work is a clear, concise presentation of a large amount of practical information in composition, which every student should know before entering college. I like the absence of fads and frills and the abundant presence of common sense. I consider the book well adapted to the needs of high school students.

Very truly yours,

ELEMENTARY ENGLISH, SPOKEN AND WRITTEN. A Two Book Series, by Lamont F. Hodge, deputy superintendent of schools, Yonkers, New York, and Arthur Lee, superintendent of schools, Clinton, Missouri. Book One of this series is intended for use in grades 4-6, Book Two in grades 7 and 8. The aim of this series is to develop the ability of the pupil to express his own thoughts and feelings-either orally or in writing-clearly, correctly, and in a way series covers adequately the elementary course of study in grammar, composition and corrective English. This series of textbooks is based on Lessons in English which is the successor of the "Reed and Kellogg' series that for more than a generation has held its remarkable popularity and success. Lessons in English was prepared by Superintendent Arthur Lee, with the cooperation of the late Brainerd Kellogg, one of the original authors. To meet the varying needs of modern school curricula in English this series has been published. The subject matter throughout both volumes has been carefully graded with a view to meet the pupils changing needs and attainments. Frequent exercises in correct usage have been included. These should assist very materially in the correction of many of the common speech errors. Selections for reading and memorizing prescribed by the Education Department of the state of New York are included in these volumes. Modernized contents, sequence of topics, many oral and written exercises, progressive treatment of the essentials of composition and grammar are some of the features of this new

series which bespeak for these books as wide a use as its predecessor, the "Reed and Kellogg' series received. Book I, cloth, 372 pages, price 96 cents; Book II, cloth, 490 pages, price $1.12. Charles E. Merrill Co., New York, Chicago.

THE COMMON-WORD SPELLERS, a TwoBook Course in Spelling for the Common Schools. Book One for grades 1-4 and Book Two for grades 5-8, by Ervin Eugene Lewis, Ph. D., superintendent of schools, Rockford, Illinois, formerly professor of education at the State University of Iowa. The Lewis CommonWord Spellers embody the most recent developments in this new pedagogy. In vocabulary, grading, and methods of presentation they mark an advance that the schoolman will be quick to appreciate. The vocabulary is based on original investigations conducted at the State University of Iowa by Dr. Lewis and Dr. W. N. Anderson. The words from 3,723 business and social letters, written by men in all sorts of professions, were carefully tabulated to ascertain those most widely used in ordinary correspondence. The results showed 3,000 words used five or more times. This list of 3,000 words has been made the basic list for the Common-Word Spellers. To it have been added 1,000 words chosen from the lists of Ayers, Cook and O'Shea, Pryor, Starch, Jones and others, including interest words from writing vocabularies of school children. The words in these spellers are carefully graded and the principles of phonics are used consistently to aid the child in learning to spell. Additional helps are supplied in the rules for spelling, pronunciation, and syllabication, and es pecially in the notes, which give concrete teaching suggestions. Book I for grades 1-4, 150 pages, price 56 cents; Book II for grades 5-8, 184 pages, price 60 cents. Ginn and Co., Boston, New York, Chicago.

ANIMAL HUSBANDRY, by John L. Tormey, B. S. A., assistant professor of animal husbandry, University of Wisconsin, Madison, and Rolla C. Lawry, B. S. A. This volume is one of the series of agricultural texts based on the theory that the successful farmer should know the physical and biological forces with which he has to contend; that he should understand the laws under which these forces operate; and that he should acquire some skill in directing them. Animal husbandry includes both the art of breeding, feeding and caring for live stock, and the fundamental laws of science upon which these practices are based. The ability of a stockman to raise and care for animals in a proper manner rests ultimately upon his knowledge of breeds, feeds and housing conditions. This volume has been prepared with the hope that its subject matter will, in some measure, meet the needs of

students of animal husbandry and create a deeper interest in the live stock industry. Cloth, 351 pages with index, price $1.40. price $1.40. American Book Co., New York, Cincinnati and Chicago.

COMMUNITY CIVICS, by Edgar W. Ames, M. A., head of the department of history and civics, Troy high school, Troy, New York, and Arvie Eldred, B. A., superintendent of schools, Troy, New York. The authors of this book rightfully contend that the teaching of the mechanics of government is not the goal of civics teaching, but rather to teach children how people live together in communities and how they may best share in the activities arising from this common life. This book is the outcome of successful classroom teaching wherein the children were made to feel their share in the welfare of the community. The use of this book should directly contribute to the making of better citizens
