I. QUID ECCLESIAE PATRES DE GENTILIUM PHILOSOPHIA
SENSERINT

Neminem latet Gentilium philosophiam et philosophos plerumque ab Ecclesiae Patribus contumeliis affectos, interdum vero laudatos fuisse. Atque nullius certe ut unum afferam exemplum - Gentilium philosophorum doctrina propius ad veritatem christianae fidei accessit 1, quam Platonis, clarissimi illius Socratis discipuli, qui tanta etiam apud Christianos gloria claruit, ut eum Clemens Alexandrinus Clemens Alexandrinus Mosem atticizantem 2 appellaret, eundemque Sanctus Augustinus non dubitaret ipsis anteponere heroibus 3. Attamen nos miratio subiit, cum animadvertimus tot exstitisse Ecclesiae Patres qui tam longe abfuerunt quin ipsum non diligerent, ut etiam eximium illum Christianismi praecursorem, quotiescumque locus et occasio eis permittebant, vilipenderent atque carperent. Inter quos excelluit ipse Ioannes Chrysostomus, illud Ecclesiae orientalis iubar, cuius in Platonem convicia, nos nonnihil obstupefaciunt, cum praesertim sciamus eloquentissimum Patrem, Libanii sophistae fuisse discipulum, atque iisdem quibus Sanctus Augustinus vixisse temporibus, qui nullam amitebat occasionem Academiae conditorem omnis generis laudibus extollendi. Cuius inter tot christianos scriptores differentiae. rationem antequam attingamus, necesse est inquirere quomodo erga Graecorum philosophos eorundemque libros et doctrinam, et doctrinam, unusquisque Ecclesiae Patrum affectus fuerit. Cumque haec indagatio altius repetenda sit, incipiamus ab iis qui primis floruerunt temporibus, quorumque opera usque ad nos pervenerunt.

Quid Iustinus, ipse quoque philosophus, unus e primis maioris momenti christianis scriptoribus, de Gentilium philosophis senserit, haud difficile est eruere, quamvis Sanctus, quod sciam, nullo loco aperte de hac re sententiam suam enucleaverit. Is enim, postquam omnium philosophorum scholas peragraverat totque doctrinas expertus erat, cum consideraret discrepantias, quibus doctrinae ethnicorum sapientium laborabant,
