Jesus," fignifies

a Saviour. For which reafon it was given to Joshua in the Old Teftament, as a Type; and to our Saviour by the Angel before his Birth. Thou shalt call his Name Matt.i. 28. Jefus; for he shall Save his people from their Sins. Now This Salvation from Sin he obtains for us, by Teaching us the Way to Life and Immortality, which he hath clearly and distinctly brought to Light in the Gofpel; by delivering us from the Dominion of Sin, through San&tification of the Spirit; and by receiving us finally into his everlasting Kingdom of Righteousness in Heaven. But more particularly and efpecially he is our Saviour in This; that, as our Great High-Prieft, he offered Himself a Sacrifice to God, for Expiation of the Guilt of Sins truly repented of and forfaken; to purge our Confcience from dead works to ferve the Living 14. God; and by his own blood, obtained eter- ver. 12. nal redemption for us; and is entred into Heaven, to appear in the prefence of God for us; where he Ever liveth, to make interceffion for us. Heb. vii. lives for ever, and has an unchangeable Priesthood; therefore he is faid in Scripture to be a Prieft, not after the order of Aaron, which was in many respects an imHeb. vi. perfect Priesthood; but after the order of Melchifedec, who was both Prince and High-Prieft, and of whom is recorded neither Predeceffor nor Succeffor, that he might be an Emblem of our true everliving High-Priest.

Chrift, fignifies And This, as it may have reference in general to All his Offices, fo it more particularly denotes his being Sent to us as an infallible Prophet, Inftructor and Guide, to reveal to us the whole Will of his Father, and bring us Lukeiv. back unto God. 3. THE title, Lord, denotes his having a Right of Dominion over us, by virtue of his having redeemed and purchafed us with his own Blood, and of his being appointed Heir of all things. For All Heb, i. 2. Power is given unto him, in Heaven and 18. in Earth: The God of our Lord Jefus Eph. i. Christ, the Father of glory,- -having fet him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality and power and might and dominion and every name that is named, not only in This world, but also in That which is to come. And he hath put all things under his Feet, (him only himself always excepted, who did 1 Cor. xv. put all things under him,) and gave him to be the Head over all things to the Church: Having highly exalted him, and given him Phil.ii. 9, a Name which is above every name; at the Name of Jefus every knee should bow,

of things in Heaven, and things in Earth, and things under the Earth; and that every tongue should confefs that Jefus Chrift is Lord, to the glory of God, the Father. ARTIC. 3. Who was conceived by the Holy Ghoil, bozn of the Virgin Mary.

IN This Article is to be confidered the General Doctrine, that our Lord was Conceived and Born: And the Particulars of that doctrine; that he was conceived, by the influence of the Holy Ghoft; born, of a Virgin; and of That particular Perfon, the Virgin Mary.

THE General doctrine, that our Lord was Conceived and Born; is a declaration of our belief, that That Divine Perfon, who was in the Beginning with God, in the Bofom of the Father, and in the Form Gal. iv. 4. of God; did in the Fulness of Time, in

order to redeem mankind by his Sufferings and Death, voluntarily and in compliance with his Father's good pleafure, condefcend to become Man.
