Laid in is a two-page letter from the author, IN WHICH HE REFERS TO THE ABOVE WORK. The letter written in 1808 reads in part:

"... Our correspondence ceased on the subject of the copies of the Columbiad because Conrad promised me about that time to drive thro' the press with all speed the cheap edition in 12mo," etc.

This fine edition was printed at the expense of Robert Fulton, to whom it is dedicated. The plates are on India paper.

Hartford: John Babcock, 1802 The Subject of the story deals with the Indians, the heroine being captured by the savages and carried into captivity. In the Revolution the author suffered severe hardships in avoiding the British army, and no doubt her story is founded on her experiences during that period. The letters are dated from Tomhanick, 1779, where she died in 1783.

The Brinley-McKee copy of this rare work. It consists of extracts from the "Pittsburgh Gazette," including "On the situation of the town of Pittsburgh," "The town consists at present of about an hundred dwelling houses, with buildings appurtenant," "The inhabitants, children, men and women are about fifteen hundred,” etc. Original poems of a political nature, "Thoughts on the present Indian War," etc.
