314 STEVENSON (R. L.). Original Manuscript Notebook. Containing extracts from and notes on "An Enqiry into the Causes and Effects of Emigration from the Highlands and Western Islands of Scotland. By Alexander Irving. 1802." In a 4to. exercise-book. £45 The extracts are mostly in the hand of Stevenson's mother with cross-headings and additions in his own hand. The first page, however, is entirely in his hand, and, in all, there are 325 words entirely in the autograph of Stevenson. His own notes concern General Stewart, the Atholl volunteers," A person seeing several men led away bound upon a cart, asked what they had done? 'O, these are the Atholl volunteers." "-hereditary jurisdictions, a roup (Scottish auction), &c. The pages are numbered throughout in Stevenson's hand, and from this and other internal evidence, it appears certain that the notes were made by his mother for Stevenson's use and afterwards worked on and added to by him. " £15 Friend Ricketson... As for preaching to men these days in the Walden strainis it of any consequence to preach to an audience of men who can fail?-or who can be revived?... If a man has speculated and failed he will probably do these things again, in spite of you or me. I confess I think it is rare that I rise to sentiment in my relations to men-ordinarily to a more patient and maybe wholesome goodwill.
