PREFATORY NOTICE.

a

OF most School Editions of Livy in use in this country the Text of Drakenborch forms the basis. It is partly for this reason that in the present Volume I have generally adopted the Text of Crevier; pointing out however in the Notes most of the various readings of Drakenborch and Alschefski.

Of a few passages I have offered explanations which I believe to differ more or less from those hitherto commonly received; but have afforded the reader the alternative of either accepting or rejecting them, by presenting him at the same time with other interpretations supported by higher authority. The Latin Commentary of Crevier and the German Commentary of Crusius have contributed largely to the Notes; and here and there the reader will find obligations acknowledged to the remarks of some of the other Editors of LIVY.
