Two parts in 1 vol. Headings and titles in GOTHIC LETTER, text in roman, long lines, FINE FULL-PAGE WOODCUT of the COUNCIL, repeated 4 times, BEAUTIFUL ORNAMENTAL BORDER, WHITE on BLACK to TITLES and FIRST PAGE of TEXT in EACH PART, two different designs, that to the titles enclosing the printer's fine device, the others containing a shield on which in two cases the arms of the original owner are supplied by hand, a different device of the printer at the end of each part, several large pictorial and ornamental woodcut initials. Slightly wormed, chiefly in the back margin at end. Fine large copy. Small folio, old vellum (covers a little wormed).

Mediolani: per Gotardum Ponticum, 1511 Extremely rare. There is no copy in the British Museum nor can we find any record of the sale of a copy. Remarkable for the beauty

of its border work, decorative initials, and spirited full-page woodcut, four times repeated, it is one of the finest of the works issued from the early Milan Press of Gotardus de Ponte, who printed in that city from 1500 to 1535.

210. COVERDALE (MILES, Bishop of Exeter).. Certain most godly, fruitful, and comfortable letters of such true Saintes and holy Martyrs of God, as in the late bloodye persecution here within this Realme, gaue their lyues for the defence of Christes holy gospel written in the tyme of theyr affliction and cruell imprysonment. Black letter and italics, title within ornamental border, woodcut of a Burning on reverse, numerous woodcut initials and ornaments. Wormhole in lower margin of pp. 479-93 and a few other slight wormholes, chiefly in lower margins, names of early owners and other writing on some margins, slightly discolored by age and use, but a remarkably fine large copy, sprinkled calf. Imprinted at London by John Day, dwelling ouer Aldersgate, beneath St. Martines, 1564

FIRST EDITION. VERY RARE and a fine example of John Day's celebrated press. The letters are by Archbishop Cranmer, Ridley Bishop of London, Hooper Bishop of Gloucester, John Bradford the Martyr, L. Saunders, John Careles, Lady Jane Grey, and others. Ritson does not notice the verses by Saunders and Careles found at pp. 215 and 634-40. The "certayne godly verses' by Saunders consist only of 14 long lines in rhyming couplets. The "sweet and heavenly exercise" by Charles is in 28 four-line stanzas, and a little further on are some verses which he wrote in Mistress Jane Glascock's book. The Preface is by Miles Coverdale, the translator of the first English Bible. The last 4 leaves are wrongly bound up at the beginning.

A genuine old piece of grangerizing executed before 1827 when scarce old portraits were much more easily met with than at the present day.
