binder at top), with large historiated initial containing a finely painted small miniature of a soul ascending to heaven, also 19 other large initials, mostly with leafy sprays attached, and a quantity of blue and gold capitals with fine pen ornamentation (slightly injured in places by damp). Wide margins, old panelled calf, rebacked. English Sæc. XV.

A fine example of English illumination about 1450. Bound with it are 13 leaves of a XVth century Latin Psalter (first few pages stained) which formerly belonged to John Prideaux, Bishop of Worcester, 1578-1650, the noted theological writer, and has his autograph signature at the top of the first page.

IN A BEAUTIFUL EMBROIDERED BINDING OF THE EARLY XVIITH

CENTURY

421. MANUSCRIPT. De Dielbeeck (A. F.). Original Manuscript on paper, dated 1619, 534 by 8 inches, oblong 8vo, containing 36 leaves of amatory sonnets, songs, anagrams, verses and poems (every piece initialled) in the French of the period, admirably composed and finely written, several in acrostic form, with a number of headings, signatures, and one sonnet in letters of gold, executed in praise of his sweetheart Susanne Vander Vorst. Decorated with 9 charming illuminated drawings on vellum, including an elaborate emblematic title and the writer's own armorial achievement, signed in full with his name and the date "A° 1619 XIX ianuary,' followed by 106 blank leaves of paper, and 27 leaves of vellum for further additions, a few in the middle slightly wormed, MOST BEAUTIFULLY BOUND AT THE TIME IN CRIMSON VELVET, EMBROIDERED IN GOLD AND SILVER THREAD, with an elaborate border on the sides, lined by a simpler border, enclosing a panel with ornamental gold and silver scroll work at each corner, in the centre of the front cover a lozenge of the Vander Vorst arms (slightly faded), within an emerald silk and gold thread wreath, the lower cover treated in exactly the same manner, but with an involved monogram in silver thread, of which the letters R.E.S.V. form an integral part, in place of the arms, the back richly embroidered with a crowned heart and crescent between scroll work and two serpents, edges finely gauffred, in gold, with painted flowers in blue and red. BOTH INTERIOR AND BINDING IN A WONDERFUL STATE OF PRESERVATION.

A remarkably choice volume both internally and externally, the embroidered binding of 1619 being one of the most beautiful examples of this lovely art extant and in the finest possible state of preservation. De Dielbeeck, a member of an ancient Flemish family, who executed this work, was both a skilful illuminator and caligraphist. It opens with a large ornamental architectural cartouche with the Vander Vorst arms on a lozenge as centrepiece, and the name Susanne Vander Vorst (and date 1619) in letters of gold on a label at the foot, the architectural details are in blue and pink shaded with crimson, at the top a lady's head (probably representing Susanne) between a cupid and kingfisher on either side, each cupid holding a tasselled cord on which are suspended the armorial shields of the Vander Vorst family, on one side is a parrot, on the other a peacock, further ornamented with lions' heads, Cupid's bow and arrows, clasped hands, etc. The next seven drawings represent either one or two cupids in various attitudes, with fine landscape backgrounds, gardens, houses, etc., the third and sixth drawings have also a lady, in one case seated under a tree, in the other the same lady picking flowers, evidently portraits of Susanne Vander Vorst.

FIRST ISSUE OF THIS ESTEEMED EDITION, with the pages 66 and 67, 80 and 81 in duplicate, and contains the portrait, the vignettes and 33 plates, designed by Moreau le Jeune. Cohen says that to secure early impressions of the illustrations, the plate of the "Sicilien," engraved by Moreau le Jeune, page 160, Vol. 4, should show the signature in a pronounced manner (which this copy contains), as in later impressions the signature is very faint. This edition is most remarkable for its beauty and is the Chef-d'œuvre of Moreau le Jeune.
