FIRST SEPARATE EDITION. EXTREMELY RARE, having been suppressed by Bolingbroke after Pope's death. The verses are upon the famous Sarah Duchess of Marlborough. Contains a note referring to the story that they had been intended to form part of the "Characters of Women,' but had been suppressed on the Duchess giving Pope £1,000. Originally inserted in a newspaper and in the Harleian Miscellany in 1746. We cannot trace the sale of a copy since that of Col. Grant at Sotheby's in May, 1900. Even the British Museum has only the 8vo edition of the same year.
