THE RARE FIRST EDITION of a play acted at Cambridge in 1614 before James I, who so admired it that in spite of its length he sat its performance out twice. It aroused much resentment among lawyers and was finally stopped by the Lord Chancellor. Good copy.

THE VERY RARE FIRST EDITION, suppressed immediately after publication because it had aroused the apprehension of the Bishops and they had caused the intervention of the King. There was a reprint made in 1680, with the old date, but the title is printed entirely in black and among other differences is the spelling "Tythes" on the title.

It is the first scholarly attempt to form a text from a collation of the First Folio with the Second Quarto, and Theobald's text, with further embellishments by Sir Thomas Hanmer, Edward Capell and the Cambridge Editors of 1866, is now generally adopted."

This text of the Merchant of Venice was privately printed at the Chiswick Press and presented by Irving to his guests at the supper held at the Lyceum, 14 Feb., 1880, to commemorate the 100th performance of the play. Accompanied by the play-bill for the evening (fore-edge of ornamental border shaved). Clement Scott's copy with his bookplate, and, loosely inserted, the original invitation form, and a copy of the Bill of Fare for the supper, the latter with the guest's name torn off.

This is a careful list of all the officers of the Royal Household. Many entries are of interest to the student of the Shakespearean drama. E. Tylney is shown as 'Master of the Revelle' at an annual fee of £20. There are 8 "Players of Enterludes."

The fee to everye of them'' is £3. 6. 8.'' An additional sum is apparently allowed for extras, as the total annual sum allocated to the Players is £36. 13. 4. "Sr. fra. Bacon' is put down as "sollicitor generall.'

A RARE AUTOGRAPH. William Clopton was the then owner of Shakespeare's house in New Place, Stratford-on-Avon. On selling it he removed to Clopton Hall, just outside the town. He is buried in the Church at Stratford-on-Avon, near Shakespeare's grave.
