121. EARLY AMERICAN MUSIC BOOK. The Massachusetts Harmony. Being a New Collection of Psalm Tunes, Fuges [sic] and Anthems, selected from the most Approved Authors, Ancient and Modern. By a Lover of Harmony. Music engraved throughout. Oblong 4to, half maroon straight-grain morocco, gilt edges, by The Club Bindery.

Boston: Printed for, and sold by John Norman, [1784] THIS EXCESSIVELY RARE EARLY HYMN BOOK is ascribed by Evans to William Billings, an early New England compiler, and the collation given as pp. 6, 10-95, taken in all probability from the collation of the Brinley copy, which was catalogued as lacking one leaf. Compared with the present copy, it was even more imperfect, AS THE PRESENT COPY ENDS AT p. 101.

A curious feature of the pagination is that the even page numbers are on the recto, and the odd numbers on the verso, which is explained by the fact that what would ordinarily have been numbered "6" is a blank page, and has been skipped. EVANS DOES NOT LOCATE A SINGLE COPY IN ANY OF THE LARGE LIBRARIES. A splendid copy, except that some leaves have suffered at the binder's hands, BUT THE BOOK IS RARE IN ANY CONDITION.
