In the center is an inlay of gray levant, with the outline of a ship in gold. The corners are also inlaid with gray, with Tudor roses stamped in gold on a background of gold dots. Doublures of dark blue levant morocco, with the early New York Arms in center, gilt edges, by R. W. Smith.

VERY SCARCE. The Society objected to the printing of this work at the

time of its delivery. It is much more than the title indicates, being virtually a Monograph on Indian Names; Indian Names of Places; Spanish Names of Places; Dutch Names of Places, etc. There are several notations on margins, etc., in an old hand.

66. PROVOST (SAMUEL, First Protestant Episcopal Bishop of New York). FINE ARMORIAL CHIPPENDALE BOOKPLATE. With the Motto "Pro Libertate." A fine impression, showing faintly the plate mark of the left side.

THIS IS THE EARLIER OF THE TWO PROVOST PLATES, struck off before the Bishop added another "o" to his name. It is considered by some to have been engraved by Maverick, but it bears a stronger resemblance to the work of H. Dawkins, in whose plate of William Whitebread the design used is remarkably similar to that used in the Provost plate.

68. SOCIETY FOR PROPAGATING THE GOSPEL IN FOREIGN PARTS. PICTORIAL ALLEGORICAL BOOKPLATE. Depicts a ship approaching the shores of America. With the Motto in oval: "Sigillvm Societatis de Promovendo Evangelio in Partibvs Transmarinis." Beneath: "The Gift of the Society for propagating the Gospell in Foreign parts. 1704."

Sir James Lowther moved "To declare, that the war carried on against the Colonies and Plantations of North America hath been ineffectual, and that all further attempts to reduce the Americans to obedience by force must be injurious to the true interests of this country, by weakening her powers to resist her ancient and confederated enemies."

Among those who voted with Sir James Lowther, were: Sir Robert Cotton, Edward Coke, William M. Pitt, Edmund Burke, William Wilberforce, Richard Payne Knight, J. Burgoyne, J. Wilkes, Hon. C. J. Fox, Sir Edward Astley, Lord Althorp, Richard B. Sheridan, Admiral Keppel, Lord Lennox, William Pitt, etc.
