A MAGNIFICENT COPY OF THE VERY RARE FIRST EDITION, especially so with Part IV (Vol. 2). Chapters II and III describe the plants (including tobacco culture) and animals of Tortuga and Hispaniola. Among the plates and maps are portraits of Fr. Lolonois, Sir Henry Morgan, Rock Brasiliano, Barth, Portugues. Folding and full-page views of "The Battel between the Spaniards and the Pyrets or Buccaneers before the Citty of Panama," with view of the town. "A map of the Country and Citty of Panama, etc., etc. On the first title is the autograph of John Montrésor, the 18th century American explorer.

THE ORIGINAL EDITION ACCOMPANIED BY THE EXCESSIVELY RARE MAP ENGRAVED IN PHILADELPHIA BY HENRY D. PURSELL, AND PRINTED FOR THE AUTHOR BY T. ROOK IN 1784. The existence of this map was doubted for many years. The map is hinged loosely, with skilful repairs in the folds, in an 8vo binding of green levant morocco, with elaborate border, by Joly. THIS IS THE ONLY COPY OF FILSON'S KENTUCKY WITH THE MAP EVER OFFERED FOR SALE BY AUCTION.

The Appendix includes "The Adventures of Col. Daniel Boon, containing a Narrative of the Wars of Kentucke," embodying much pioneer history of importance here first printed.

A sheet of paper is loosely inserted on which is written THREE LINES IN THE AUTOGRAPH OF DANIEL BOONE, reading: "febury the 3d 1787. Re'd. of Daniel Boone of Mrs. Brockmons Money Which Was Payd him to Clear out thire Lands the sum of 4. 6. 1” (Signed in another hand) “Jacob Crosthwait." The authenticity of this document is attested by a letter from Lyman C. Draper, Sec'ty of the Wisconsin Historical Society, stating that he obtained it from Boone's son, Col. Nathan Boone.

58. FOSTER (NICHOLAS). A Briefe Relation of the late Horrid Rebellion acted in the Island Barbadas, in the West-Indies, wherein is contained their Inhumane Acts and Actions in Fining and Banishing the well-affected to the Parliament of England, etc. Small 8vo, full dark red crushed morocco, inside dentelles, gilt edges, with the Miller arms on covers, by Pratt.

Printed by I. G. for Richard Lowndes on Ludgate Hill, 1650 FIRST EDITION. This is a contemporary account of the disturbance in Barbados upon the overthrow of Charles I. in England. The leaf following the title marked "Reader' is in verse.

The outer margin of title has been restored and has a few slight mends in some margins but on the whole in very nice state. It is an exceedingly scarce book.

THE VERY PARE ORIGINAL EDITION, with the map, said by Sir Clements Markham to be found only in a few copies. This contains the 2 leaves sometimes described as having been cancelled. It has also many errors in pagination, indicating that it is one of the first copies issued. The Thomas Harrison-Halsey copy, with bookplate of the former.

[FROBISHER (SIR MARTIN).] A True Discourse of the late Voyages of Discouerie, for the finding of a passage to Cathaya, by the Northweast under the conduct of Martin Frobisher Generall: Deuided into three Bookes. In the First whereof is shewed, his First Voyage. . . . In the second, is set out his Second Voyage, with the aduentures and accidents thereof. In the thirde, is declared the strange fortunes which hapned in the Third Voyage, with a seuerall description of the Countrey and the people there inhabiting, etc. Small 4to, full crimson morocco, gilt back, gilt edges, by Rivière. THE EXCESSIVELY RARE FIRST ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE THREE VOYAGES, with the woodcut of the Hatton coat of arms, and cut of a fish on p. 15 of the second voyage. Printed in BLACK LETTER.

The author of this work, Captain George Best, accompanied Frobisher on all of his three voyages (in 1576, 1577, and 1578) and here gives the first account of them.

THE PRESENT COPY CONTAINS THE DUPLICATED PASSAGE IN THE DEDICACATION, which was omitted in the second issue, and a comparison of this copy with the Lenox library variations discloses still further proof of the precedence of this copy over the others. This is a reprint, with notes, of the Latin version (Nuremberg, 1580) of Dionysius Settle's account of Frobisher's Second Voyage. This version is based on the French translation of Settle's work published by Antoine Chuppin, in 1578.
