UNIQUE COPY. The book is made up of the proof sheets of the engraved leaves each accompanied by the ORIGINAL SEPIA WASH AND PENCIL DRAWING by Birket Foster; making 28 exquisite vignettes in all. The text of the poem being only partly supplied on the engraved leaves, is completed on the reverse of each leaf. The title used was especially printed for this book.

The inscription in the second volume varies slightly by the addition of "Philadelphia, 1845." Lowell's autograph appears on both titles.

"The subject of the Spanish Convent Bells is one that strikes the fancy at once. There is a bell of the same kind at a railway station in Boston; and ten years ago, in 1846, I noted it down in a memorandum book as a theme for a lyric. But nothing has yet come of it."

Laid in, is A SPLENDID 4pp. AUTOGRAPH LETTER FROM GEORGE MEREDITH TO DOCTOR JESSOPP, RELATING TO THIS BOOK.

"Rhoda Fleming is just completed (all but the last two chapters). It is 3 vols. six months' work, minus a week or so. Tinsley offers (won't look at the MS.) Four hundred for it. But, I fear he is not a safe man, and I don't quite like to sell it for that sum. Chapman bids me wait till November-at that time I hope to have another novel done. I'd rather, if he'll advance. I shall see in a week. Meantime it's cheerful to think that I can work tolerably quick." There is also a reference to a translation being made of 'Richard Feverel,' and the latter portion of the letter refers to his son Arthur.

Inserted, is an A. L. s. of John Kenyon presenting this copy to the Belgian Minister on behalf of Browning.

"My friend Robert Browning having heard that you have been desirous to possess this (now suppressed) book requests that I will offer it to you in his name and mine. It is one of two copies that he happens to possess.

These Letters of Shelley were discovered to be forgeries, AND THE WHOLE EDITION WAS IMMEDIATELY SUPPRESSED. Consequently copies ARE NOW
