[NUMBER SIXTY-EIGHT]

[ocr errors]

In Lord Broughton's (John Cam Hobhouse) "Recollections of a Lon Life" is the following description of a visit by Thackeray to him "Thackeray the author of Pendennis is also staying with me. He is most agreeable man, very tall and big with a broken nose and alway wears spectacles. He gave my daughter a spoimen of his power o sketching by making a frontispiece to Pendennis in pen and ink."

THIS COPY IS THE IDENTICAL COPY BELONGING TO LORD BROUGHTON' DAUGHTER AND CONTAINS THE ORIGINAL FRONTISPIECE DRAWN BY THACKERA IN PEN AND INK, WITH HIS INSCRIPTION "BELONGING TO MISS SOPHI HOBHOUSE, WRITTEN BY MR. WILLIAM THACKERAY, PRINTED BY W BRADBURY WM. EVANS OF LONDON BOUND BY RANDLE OF DEVIZES’’ Sophia was the third daughter of Lord Broughton, married in July, 185 to the Earl of Roden and the volumes have remained in the family unt recently.

Thackeray gave very few of his book away, and these in most case were his minor books and not his great novels. A few of his minor book are in existence in which he made a small drawing for presentation pu poses, BUT THIS VOLUME SEEMS TO BE UNIQUE IN HAVING A NEW AND U PUBLISHED DESIGN FOR AN ILLUSTRATED TITLE FOR ONE OF HIS GREATI WORK. The volume also bears in itself the facts that declare its auther ticity, in Lord Broughton's statement and the drawing with Thackeray inscription.
