The books in this catalogue consist chiefly of selections from the Arbury Library of Sir Francis Newdigate-Newdegate. It was first offered for sale at auction in London, and later withdrawn and sold to Mr. Smith. These books have only just been received from London. Special attention should be called to the copy of Herrick's "Hesperides", which must have been in the Arbury Library from the time it was first published until today, and can not have been handled by more than half a dozen persons. Many other volumes are in the choicest possible condition.

1. ESOP. Fabulæ latine Rinucio interprete. Gothic character. 51 unnumbered leaves with signatures (a-c8, d4, e-f8, g7; 27 lines to the page. Fol. 1 blank; fol. 2r: Vita Esopi fabulatoris clarissimi e greco latina per Rinucium facta ad Reuerendissimuz patrem dnm Antonium tituli sancti Chrysogoni presbiterum | Cardinalem. Printed in Black Letter. The title was evidently larger than the pages of text, and has been clipped off by a binder. One of the Articles requires a report on all unchaste persons in the Diocese, and those who have used any inchantments, sorceries, incantations or witchcrafts.'' From the Arbury Library, with label.

9. [ASH (THOMAS).] Carolina; or a Description of the Present State of that Country, and the Natural Excellencies thereof, viz. FIRST EDITION. The first account of the settlers at Port Royal, before they moved to the west bank of the Ashley River in Carolina. The author was clerk on H. M. S. Richmond and visited the settlement during 1680-82, and published his book on his return to England.

FIRST EDITION. VERY FINE COPY IN ORIGINAL BINDING, WITH GENUINE PRELIMINARY AND FINAL BLANK LEAVES. At B4 is a singularly quaint allusion to Shakespeare's "Falstaff.'' With bookplate of Thomas Foley, whose name appears several times on the fly leaves.

Breviarium ad Usum Laicorum Novo ordine dispositum. 4 vols. small 8vo, old polished cream calf, compartments on backs, inlaid black borders, gilt tooled, with small center inlays of red morocco, stamped with gold fleurs-de-lys. The central panel of the sides is of cream calf, spattered with gold dots, black inlaid borders, richly gold tooled, with corner inlays of red morocco, ornamented with a rose and dots. The central ornament is of black and red morocco inlays, richly gilded. Doublures of green morocco, elaborate gilt border, in the style of Padeloup, gilt end-papers, gilt edges. 28. BLOCK BOOK. Biblia Pauperum. Specimen Leaves from a Block Book of the Fifteenth Century. Two leaves in each volume, mounted on guards, in sunken mounts. 2 vols. 4to, full brown levant morocco, gilt ornaments on backs, sides blind and gold tooled panels, with corner and center ornaments, gilt edges, by Rivière. XV. Cent.

VERY RARE. These interesting leaves are in the main pictorial, representing the Worship of the Golden Calf, the Ark of the Covenant, the Last Supper, the healing of the Demoniac Woman, etc. One of the leaves is somewhat defective, but the remaining three are in very good condition.
