58. BOCCACE (JEAN). Traite des Mesadventures de Personages Signalez. 8vo. Old calf. Paris, Nicolas Eve, 1578

A SPLENDID COPY of the VERY RARE EDITION ORIGINALE of Boccaccio's "De Casibus Virorum et Foeminarum Illustrium" translated by Claude Witart.

IT IS THE SOLE BOOK KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED BY NICOLAS EVE THE ROYAL BINDER TO HENRI III, HENRI IV, AND MARGUERITE DE VALOIS. Only three copies, including the present, are recorded.

The neat woodcut device of Adam and Eve on the title-page not only refers to Eve's own surname, but to the sign of "Adam and Eve" under which he worked in the Rue Charretière. Though celebrated as the Binder to Henri III, Henri IV and Marguerite de Valois, very little is known about his work as a publisher. He apparently published very few books, as this is the only one referred to in bibliographies.

A PARIS,

feigne d'Adam & Eue.
1578,

AVEC PRIVILEGE DV ROY.

VERY RARE ORIGINAL EDITION OF "BOCCACCIO," AND THE SOLE BOOK KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED BY NICOLAS EVE, THE ROYAL BINDER

TO HENRI III, HENRY IV, AND MAR

GUERITE DE VALOIS

In addition to the above mentioned illustrations, there are A DUPLICATE SET of the brilliant impressions of the engraved title, (PROOF, with different inscription), and six full-page engravings to "Le Lutrin" by Picart. The engraved title is in PROOF STATE-OPEN LETTERS.

The portrait of Queen Caroline is extremely important, for in this superb copy she is described as "Guillelmine Charlotte Reine de la Grande Bretagne "while in all the known copies occurring for sale in Great Britain, she appears as the Princess of Wales.

Moreover, this example was printed at AMSTERDAM, whereas all the recorded copies sold in England carry the imprint "La Haye."

We have called this a "Large Paper" copy, but is in all probability much more. We think that a very few copies must have been printed on LARGEST PAPER-if so, this is one, for the fine margins are extraordinarily wide.

NO OTHER LARGE PAPER COPY, and NO UNCUT COPY even on small paper is recorded as occurring for sale in Great Britain.
