377. MANUSCRIPT. Book of Hours. Manuscript in Latin, written by a German scribe on 133 leaves of vellum. A full-page miniature (somewhat worn) appears on the first page, the apparel similar in design and execution of the old block book illustrations. There are 10 illuminated initials, nearly all having the cloud motif, the illuminations being in red, blue, nile green and pink, which two latter colors are rarely seen in the later manuscripts. Capitals in red and blue. Thick stamped pigskin (worn), with one perfect clasp. XIII Cent.

THIS MANUSCRIPT IS WRITTEN IN A BOLD GOTHIC, and at the end are several leaves of manuscript in a later hand, three pages being written in distinct lettres batardes." The date at the end of the manuscript, in a smaller Gothic than the rest of the MS. is 1283.

378. Koran (portion). Arabic and Persian, with interlinear Commentary of a later period. On nearly every page are circular and rose-shaped ornamentations in red, green and gold, the larger ornamentations bordered with blue. Large 4to, morocco, blind stamped (a large number of the leaves are repaired). XIII Cent.

THIS IS A FINE AND UNUSUAL SPECIMEN OF THE NASKLIQ CALLIGRAPHY, very bold and large characters, written on 314 leaves of native glazed paper.

379. Divan Mevlana Shirazi [Poems of Shirazi]. Persian Manuscript, written on 221 leaves of native glazed paper, with 6 illuminated miniatures and two pages of decorations at the beginning. Folio, lacquer binding decorated sides, doublures of black morocco with corners and center cut out and strikingly decorated in gold, gray, red and green. XVI Cent.

This is a beautifully written manuscript, IN A HANDSOME LACQUER BINDING. The central oval panels are pictorial in design, possibly representing some of the incidents in the Poems, and contain 11 figures in all, the robes

being of beautiful color, and the gold decorations most tastefully and tenuously applied. The remainder of the covers is occupied with borders, surrounding a large inner panel of interlaced scrolls of gold, on which are painted flowers and leaves in profusion.

380. Kalliyat el Sheikh Sadi (Complete Works of Sadi). Persian Manuscript, written on 162 leaves of native glazed paper. with 3 large miniatures and 12 smaller decorations. In addition, practically every page contains floral designs in color, on gold backgrounds, each page divided in three columns, separated by a gold ornamented ribbon. Folio, covered with a 16th Century Persian brocade silk, of very pleasing design and coloring (one margin cut away). XVI Cent.

A PLEASING MANUSCRIPT OF THE WORKS OF SADI, in a most interesting 16th Century Persian textile binding. The chapter headings are illum inated and with the head-piece on the first page exhibit a characteristic delicacy in execution and design.

Kulyiat Sa-di. Five Books of Sadi. Written on 396 leaves of native glazed paper. With 12 full-page miniatures, and 17 decorations in the text. Folio, full old morocco, center and corners sunken, and ornamented with gold; doublures of olive mo rocco, with a faint decoration in green.

XVI Cent.

AN INTERESTING PERSIAN MANUSCRIPT OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY, in which the miniatures are pictorial, and of a particularly pleasing nature, Each page is profusely decorated in gold and colors, and the calligraphy is within borders of green, orange, gold, red and blue, and marginal ornaments of blue and gold. A few leaves are stained.

382. Ne Fayis el Finoun (The Beauty of Science). Persian Manuscript, written on 430 leaves of native glazed paper of different shades. There are 5 miniatures, full-page and smaller, besides 3 decorations in gold and colors. Folio, bound in a fine old red morocco, with blind border and ornaments on sides.

Month of Holy Ramazan, 991 [1541]

This beautifully written manuscript contains miniatures of a very unusual character, the figures being executed in outline, with the greatest degree of delicacy, with just a suggestion of color, and faint heightening with gold. The pages are bordered with gold, and a faint outer fillet of blue.

383. Sharagan. (Collection of Ecclesiastical Hymns). Armenian Manuscript. Written on 427 leaves of native paper. 19 large miniatures and 131 decorations in gold and colors. The Initials and Capitals are painted in gold, and occasionally lines are written in red, blue and gold. Original dark red morocco, blind tooled, with flap.

THIS MOST UNUSUAL MANUSCRIPT, in Armenian characters, was written by Sarkis, High Priest, from the town of Hizam, which in the 15th and 16th centuries was famous for its Art and Calligraphy. The date is mentioned as 1045 (Armenian date) which would make the Christian date, 1595. The last three pages contain the Memorial in full.

In the centre of the volume there is a red seal of the Katolicos Eliazar, with a Memorial of his handwriting, where he mentions that he gives this "gold case" to his youngest attendant Israel. In confirmation of this he has put his Seal in the Armenian date 1139.
