OMAR KHAYYAM IN A CURIOUS JEWELED BINDING BY SANGORSKI AND SUTCLIFFE

The back cover contains an outer border of solid pointillé tooling with an inlay of snakes, their interlaced bodies forming a chain extending entirely around the cover. The inner panel is filled with buds and full-blown roses, the flowers in cream and the leaves in green, richly gilded, a medallion in the centre containing a wineglass, an inlay of maroon presenting the appearance of a filled glass. Doublures of green levant morocco, with a beautiful inlaid and gold border, flys of green polished levant similarly decorated, gilt top, uncut, by Sangorski and Sutcliffe.

443. OMAR KHAYYAM. The Rubaiyat. Translated by Edward Fitzgerald. An Illuminated Pictorial Manuscript by E. Whitehead, in gold and colors. Small 4to, red levant morocco, gilt and inlaid back. On the front cover is an outer border of roses and leaf sprays, the flowers inlaid in cream, the sprays in gold, with 10 hearts of mother of pearl set in. A sunken panel is richly inlaid and gold tooled, formed of grape vines and bunches of fruit, interlaced, with 9 opals and 4 garnets mounted. The inner medallion, raised, has inlaid, a snake, intertwined, with a jeweled eye, its fang extending into a filled cup of wine. The back cover is a sumptuous piece of workmanship, being virtually covered with floral sprays, inlaid and gilded, the centre medallion containing bunches of grapes, vine, and filled wine cup, in various inlays. The extreme outer ribbon border of the covers contain lines from the Poem. The doublures are of red levant morocco, with an inner panel of blue levant, gilded with leaf scrolls, having a central heart in maroon morocco; flys of blue levant morocco, with conventional rosebuds in red, uncut, by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. In black morocco, silk-lined case.

ONE OF THE MOST ELABORATE BINDINGS EXECUTED BY SANGORSKI AND SUTCLIFFE.
