This magnificent Work was published by subscription, in single prints, issued at long intervals, several at 31s 6d each. Sir Joseph Banks, upon an occasion of addressing the Society of Antiquaries, said, in reference to the representations of Mosaic Pavements in the above work, "Others have shown us what they thought these remains ought to have been, but Fowler has shewn us what they are, and this is what we want." For graphic truthfulness and effect, these representations have never been equalled. The Prospectuses are very interesting, and are now great rarities. 318 FOWLER (William) Coloured Engravings of the principal MOSAIC PAVEMENTS which have been discovered in Great Britain, Monastic Buildings, Fonts, Brasses, also of the STAINED GLASS WINDOWS of the Cathedrals of York, Lincoln, &c. &c. including a most splendid Series of Seven Norman Earls of Chester, and two Saxon Earls of Mercia, from the Windows of Aston Hall, Warwickshire, 2 vols. atlas folio, CONTAINING 51 MOST BEAUTIFULLY COLOURED PLATES, in exact imitation of the original subjects, all mounted on thick drawing paper, with the "Advertisements" to a few of the plates, half russia, £20. 1798-1825

The ingenious Mr. Fowler was originally a journeyman carpenter, of patient and persevering habits; the difficulties he had to encounter in executing the present work were almost insurmountable. The work, which is scrupulously correct in all its features, is entirely his own; the drawing, the engraving, the preparation of the colours, and even the making of the paper, (for he could get no paper-maker to undertake it) are all the work of his own hands. Not forty copies were ever completed.
