Μετὰ ταῦτα Ξενοφῶν μὲν ἡγεῖτο, οἱ δ' εἵποντο. Νέων δὲ καὶ παρὰ ̓Αριστάρ χου ἄλλοι ἔπειθον ἀποτρέπεσθαι· οἱ δ ̓ οὐχ ὑπήκουον. ἐπεὶ δ ̓ ὅσον τριάκοντα σταδίους προεληλύθεσαν, ἀπαντᾷ Σεύθης. καὶ ὁ Ξενοφῶν ἰδὼν αὐτὸν προσελάσαι ἐκέλευσεν, ὅπως ὅτι πλείστων ἀκουόντων εἴποι αὐτῷ ἃ ἐδόκει συμφέρειν. ἐπεὶ 5 δὲ προσῆλθεν, εἶπε Ξενοφῶν· “Ἡμεῖς πορευόμεθα ὅπου μέλλει ἕξειν τὸ στράτευμα τροφήν· ἐκεῖ δ ̓ ἀκούοντες καὶ σοῦ καὶ τῶν τοῦ Λακωνικοῦ, αἱρησόμεθα ἳ ἂν κράτιστα δοκῇ εἶναι. ἢν οὖν ἡμῖν ἡγήσῃ ὅπου πλεῖστά ἐστιν ἐπιτήδεια, ὑπὸ σοῦ νομιοῦμεν ξενίζεσθαι.”2

α) Give the principal parts of πεπτωκότες (1. 4), συμπέμπουσαι (1. 5), τάττω (1. 9). b) Give a synopsis of νικῷεν (1. 2), and ἀπεκρίνατο (1. 6), each in the tense, voice, person, and number in which it occurs, giving the nominative singular in all genders of the participle.

c) Give the nominative and genitive singular in all genders of παμπληθείς (1. 3), πεπτωκότες (Ι. 4), ἀκούσαντας (1. 7). Decline πόλεις (1. 5), σύ (1. 7) in the singular and plural.

d) Inflect ἀπεκρίνατο (1. 6) in the singular of the imperfect indicative middle, and in the plural of the aorist indicative middle. Infect παρεσόμεθα (1. 10) and ἔφαμεν (1. 10) in the singular of the mood, voice, and tense in which they occur.

e) Compare the adjectives from which τάχιστα and κάλλιστα are formed. f) Explain by derivation the meaning of παμπληθεῖς (1. 3) and εὐθυμοτέρους (1. 6). g) Translate into Greek:

1. If they ask you who won the victory, what will you answer ?

2. I heard that many of our soldiers had been killed before the allies arrived.

3. Let us send men to find out what has happened.
