A.-I. Translate into English

(α) Πρεσβύτατον τῶν ὄντων θεός, ἀγέννητος γὰρ κάλλιστον κόσμος, ποίημα γὰρ θεοῦ· μέγιστον τόπος, πάντα γὰρ χωρεῖ· τάχιστον νοῦς, διὰ παντὸς γὰρ τρέχει· ἰσχυρότατον ἀνάγκη, κρατεῖ γὰρ πάντων σοφώτατον χρόνος, ἀνευρίσκει γὰρ πάντα.

(6) Φίλιππος ἐρωτώμενος, οὔστινας μάλιστα φιλεῖ, καὶ οὕστινας. μάλιστα μισεῖ, τοὺς μέλλοντας, ἔφη, προδιδόναι μάλιστα φιλῶ, τοὺς δ ̓ ἤδη προδεδωκότας μάλιστα μισῶ.

(c) ἔλεγε τῷ Ξενίαδῃ, τῷ πριαμένῳ αὐτόν, δεῖν· πείθεσθαι αὐτῷ, εἰ καὶ δοῦλος εἴη καὶ γὰρ ἰατρὸς ἢ κυβερνήτης εἰ δοῦλος εἴη, πεισθῆναι δεῖν αὐτῷ.

2. Translate into Greek

(1) The physicians do not know what the disease is from which the king's son is suffering..

(2) It is like a wise commander to fortify the harbour before the enemy's fleet appears.

(3) It is better to persuade than to compel revolters to do their duty.

(4) A great storm arose in the night, and more than two hundred houses in the town were destroyed.

(5) It is likely that many strangers will come to our land this year to see all the wonderful things which manufacturers are sending.

4. Decline throughout-μέλας, φλόξ, ὀστέον, ὁδούς, ὄνειρος, ἅπαις, ἐμαυτοῦ, ὅστις: and compareπένης, τλήμων, γεραῖος, ταχύς.

5. Give the Greek for

(a) The (two) lions-to the bunches of grapesthe old woman (acc.)—of the hero-to the mothers of the vein-to the ear-of the (two) leaders.

(b) (Paying attention to the tenses). We have admired (Oavuázw). I had deceived (étararáw). Thou diedst (arovýкw). They were taken alive (Swypɛów). I had been brought up (rpέow). They appeared (pair). It shall be written (ypápw). He was ashamed (aioxúvw). We shall be thought (νομίζω). He will prepare himself (παρασκευάζω).

B.-1. Translate into English

(α) Νυκτερευόντων δ ̓ αὐτῶν ἐνταῦθα ἐπιπίπτει χιὼν · ἄπλετος, ὥστε ἀπέκρυψε καὶ τὰ ὅπλα καὶ τοὺς ἀνθρώπους κατακειμένους· καὶ τὰ ὑποζύγια συνεπόδισεν ἡ χιών· καὶ πολὺς ὄκνος ἦν ἀνίστασθαι κατακειμένων γὰρ ἀλεεινὸν ἦν ἡ χιὼν ἐπιπεπτωκυῖα ὅτῳ μὴ παραῤῥυείη. Ἐπεὶ δὲ Ξενοφῶν ἐτόλμησε γυμνὸς ὢν ἀναστὰς σχίζειν ξύλα, τάχα ἀναστάς τις καὶ ἄλλος ἐκείνου ἀφελόμενος ἔσχιζεν. Ἐκ δὲ τούτου καὶ οι ἄλλοι ἀναστάντες πῦρ ἔκαιον, καὶ ἐχρίοντο πολὺ γὰρ ἐνταῦθα εὑρίσκετο χρίσμα, ᾧ ἐχρῶντο ἀντ ̓ ἐλαίου, σύειον καὶ σησάμινον καὶ ἀμυγδάλινον ἐκ τῶν πικρῶν καὶ τερεβίνθινον· ἐκ δὲ τῶν αὐτῶν · τούτων καὶ μύρον εὑρίσκετο.

(β) καὶ ἰδόντες μέλαν τι χωρίον διὰ τὸ ἐκλελοιπέναι

αὐτόθι τὴν χιόνα, εἴκαζον τετηκέναι. Καὶ τετήκει διὰ κρήνην τινὰ ἢ πλησίον ἦν ἀτμίζουσα ἐν νάπῃ.

(c) ἐφείπετο δὲ ἀεὶ τὸ ὑπερβάλλον τοῦ στρατεύματος εἰς τὰς κώμας τὰς ἐν τοῖς ἄγκεσι τε καὶ μυχοῖς τῶν ὀρέων.

(d)

ἔδοξεν ἐν πέδαις δεδέσθαι, αὗται δὲ αὐτῷ αὐτόμαται περιῤῥυῆναι, ὥστε λυθῆναι καὶ διαβαίνειν ὁπόσον ἐβούλετο.

(ε) οὗτοί εἰσιν, οὓς ὁρᾶτε, μόνοι ἔτι ἡμῖν ἐμποδὼν τὸ μὴ ἤδη εἶναι ἔνθα πάλαι ἐσπεύδομεν· τούτους, ἤν πως δυνώμεθα, καὶ ὠμοὺς δεῖ καταφαγεῖν.

2. Translate and annotate

(1) ὅπη ἐδύναντο ἕκαστος οἱ βάρβαροι ἐτόξευον καὶ ἔβαλλον.

(2) πρὸ ἀμφοῖν προβεβλημένος ἀπεχώρει.

(3) παρ' ἀσπίδας παραγαγόντας τὴν ἐνωμοτίαν ἐπὶ φάλαγγος.

(4) πέμπει τῶν ἐκ τῆς κώμης σκεψομένους πῶς ἔχοιεν οἱ τελευταῖοι.

(5) καὶ τὰ μὲν σκευοφόρα τῶν Ἑλλήνων καὶ ὁ ὄχλος ἀκμὴν διέβαινε.

3. Give the Greek for—

He said "Armenia."

When this had been resolved on.

Then Hannibal called his soldiers together, and told them openly that he was going to lead them into Italy. "The Romans," said he, "have demanded that I and my principal officers should be delivered up to them as malefactors. Soldiers, will you suffer such an indignity? The Gauls are holding out their arms to us, inviting us to come to them, and to assist them in revenging their manifold injuries."

2. Translate

Una est enim amicitia in rebus humanis, de cuius utilitate omnes uno ore consentiunt; quamquam a multis virtus ipsa contemnitur et venditatio quaedam et ostentatio esse dicitur; multi divitias despiciunt, quos parvo contentos tenuis victus cultusque delectat; honores vero, quorum cupiditate quidam inflammantur, quam multi ita contemnunt, ut nihil inanius, nihil esse levius existiment! 3. Give the Third Person Plural of the Future and Pluperfect Indicative Active of comprimo, dimico, expello, fero, intercludo, pando, refugio, revello, tollo.

4. Put into Latin-more bravely than wisely-no one believes him the twenty-first of June-they fought all day-who taught you to play the lyre? the ship was three miles from the shore -the city of Rome is very ancient-I fear that you may make a mistake.

B.-1. Translate
