FOREWORD

The following competitive assessment of the electric power generating equipment industry is intended to inform decision-makers in the Executive and Legislative Branches of the problems and prospects of this industry. The assessment is meant to inspire debate on the issues which could lead to new ideas and perhaps a consensus on an appropriate course for U.S. Government policy with respect to this industry. Comments on this assessment may be addressed to the attention of:

Deputy Assistant Secretary

Capital Goods and International Construction
Room 2001B

U.S. Department of Commerce
Washington, D.C. 20230

The scope of the assessment includes the equipment which comprises principal components of electric power generation plants--power boilers (SIC 34433, 34436) and turbine generator sets (SIC 3511).

Sources of resource data and information include the International Trade Administration, Bureau of Census and Bureau of Economic Analysis of the U.S. Department of Commerce; Bureau of Labor Statistics, Department of Labor; and the Department of Energy. In the course of this assessment, advice and comments were sought from the private sector, including the Edison Electric Institute, the Electric Power Research Institute, the North American Electric Reliability Council, and the Tennessee Valley Authority.

The assistance and information provided by individuals within these organizations is gratefully acknowledged. Responsibility for the analysis and findings in this report remains with the U.S. Department of Commerce.
