3 The great Jehovah he,
Who left his lofty throne;

And took from woe our souls to free,
A body like our own.

4 Therewith divinely fought,
Till conquer'd all our foes;
And when the work had fully wrought,
By his own pow'r arose.

5 On heav'ns imperial throne,
In human form he reigns,
No other God the angels own,
In all their peaceful plains.

[blocks in formation]

Declares himself the only king,
O'er heav'n and earth to reign.

2 In clouds behold him come,
His glorious advent view;
Let every heart prepare him room,
He will his Church renew.

3 The promise that he seal'd,
Again to shew his face,

His love and mercy has fulfill'd,
And we the favour'd race.

4 Treasures of love and light,
With which the world is stor'd,
Are now laid open to our sight,
By him our only Lord.

5 Before his throne we fall,
The gift of heav'n receive;
Adore our Jesus as our all,
And ever to him live.

The golden age and fall. Gen. ii. 18.

M. SIBLY.

OME brethren, let us contemplate
The golden age of man ;

That holy, pure, thrice happy state,
And how the fall began.

2 Th' angelic nature fili'd the soul,
All good the mind's employ,
Rivers of peace and pleasure roll,
No guilt to damp the joy.

3 Ev'ry affection, thought, and word,
Flow'd in from heav'n alone;
Pleas'd with the guidance of the Lord,
To a superior throne.

4 But in this honour not remains,
To look from God began;
Inclin'd to break celestial chains,
And thus himself unman.

5 Now nature's fall we full deplore,
Far distant from the Lord;

Dear Lord, thou dost that fall restore,
In giving us thy word.

6 Thy word conjoins our souls to thee,
Our evils doth remove;

From Satan's bondage sets us free,
And raises us above.

7 Jesus to thee we give all praise,
For this great blessing giv'n;
"Twill guide our feet through all our days,
And fit our souls for heav'n.

HYMN XXII. L. M.
Birth of the Lord.

M. SIBLY

LL people rise, exult and sing,
Lo! gladsome tidings angels bring;
Cheer up your hearts, the angels say,
Jesus the Lord is born to day.

2 Jehovah great stoops down to earth,
He comes to men by human birth;
The honour'd place, the virgin's womb,
Let ev'ry heart prepare him room.
3 All hail the happy, happy morn,
That sees our Saviour newly born;
In mortal flesh Jehovah's clad,
Mortals adore, give praise, be glad.

4 The king of glory and of grace,
He comes to save our wretched race;
Both sin and Satan he'll subdue,
And bring the gates of heav'n in view,

5 All people loud their voices raise,
Jehovah Jesus' love to praise;
Let ev'ry creature shout and sing
The honours of our Lord and King.

HYMN XXIII. S. M..

The establishment of the Church. Zech iv. 9.

[ocr errors]

NE grand design in view,

The Lord hath ever had,

M. SIBLY.

His Church and kingdom to renew,
And save the souls he made.

2 His love for this doth burn,

Stronger than death doth prove, O'erwhelming waters cannot drown, Yea, nothing therefrom move.

3 The building is his own,

The work of his own hands,
Love lays the first foundation stone,
By truth the fabric stands.

4 We bless our loving Lord,

Pure truths are now reveal'd, Wide open stands the holy word, The sacred book's unseal'd.

5 Ye humble souls then come,
Accept the offer'd grace,

Your Lord and Saviour calls you home,
To see his glorious face.

HYMN XXIV. C. M.

The waters of the sanctuary. Ezek. xlvii. 34.

1 FR

M. SIBLY.

ROM Jesus living waters flow,
To purify the soul,

To save from sin, from death, and woe,
And make the wounded whole.

2 These waters, holy, pure, and clean,
Flow through the holy word;
Each humble soul may wade therein,
And bless his loving Lord.

3 All truths with good from Jesus flow,
In rich variety;

And do we practice what we know,
We shall most happy be.

4 Let love to God, and love to man,
Our ev'ry thought inspire,
Then heav'nly things our souls may scan,
Full to our hearts desire.

5 In living waters we may swim,
In love's pure ocean bask;
Receive our life our light from him,
Who gives before we ask.
