HYMN CV. C. M.

U. C. F.

OY to the world; the Lord is come,

[ocr errors]

Let earth receive her king:

Let ev'ry heart prepare him room,
And Heav'n and nature sing.

plains,

2 Joy to the earth, the Saviour reigns!
Let men their songs employ :
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and
Repeat the sounding joy.

3 No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;

He comes to make his blessings flow
Far as the curse is found.

4 He came with truth and grace to bless
The nations, and to prove

The common parent's faithfulness,
And universal love.

BEGIN, my tongue, some heav'nly theme

And speak some boundless thing,

The mighty works or mightier name
Of our eternal king.

Tell of his wond'rous faithfulness,
And sound his pow'r abroad;
Sing the sweet promise of his grace,
And the performing God.

3 Froclaim Salvation from the Lord,
" For wretched dying men ;'
His hand has writ the sacred word
With an immortal pen.

4 Engrav❜d as in eternal brass
The mighty promise shines;
Nor can the pow'rs of darkness raze
Those everlasting lines.

HYMN CVII. S. M.

U. C. F.

BEHOLD the grace appear,
The blessing promis'd long;

Angels announce the Saviour near
In this triumphant song:

"Glory to God on high,

And heav'nly peace on earth; Good will to men, to Angels joy, At your Redeemer's birth."

In worship so divine,

Shall man refrain his part?
Forbid it gratitude! we join
The song, with grateful heart.

Glory to God on high,

And heav'nly peace on earth,
Good will to men, to angels joy,
At our Redeemer's birth.

HYMN CVIII. C. M.

U. C. F.

FOR a shout of sacred joy
To God the sov❜reign king!
Let ev'ry land their tongues employ,
And hymns of triumph sing.

2 In Isr'el stood his ancient throne;
He lov'd that chosen race;

But now he calls the world his own,
And heathens taste his grace.

3 While angels form new songs of praise,
Let mortals learn their strains:
And all the earth new honours raise,
O'er all the earth he reigns.

4 Rehearse his praise with awe profound;
Let knowledge lead the song;
Nor mock him with a solemn sound,
Upon a thoughtless tongue.

5 America is thine, O Lord,

Here Abra'ms God is known;
Let us be grateful for his word,
And bow before his throne.

Ho

HYMN CIX. S. M.

U. C. F.

OW beauteous are their feet,
Who stand on Zion's hill!

Who bring salvation on their tongues,

And words of peace reveal. *

2 How charming is their voice!
How sweet the tidings are!
"Zion behold thy Saviour King,
He reigns and triumphs here."
3 How happy are our eyes,
That see this heav'nly light;
Prophets and kings desir'd it long,
But dy'd without the sight!

4 How happy are our ears,
That hear this joyful sound,
Which kings and prophets waited for,
And sought but never found!

5 The watchmen join their voice,
And sweetest notes employ :
Jerusalem breaks forth in songs,
And deserts learn the joy.

HYMN CX. C. M.

The Halcyon Morning.

A. M. SARJENT.

THE op'ning day dispels the dark,
The gloom is past and gone-

Behold in joy, the warbling lark,
The thrush and feather'd throng;

2 Their pleasing notes conspire to shew,
How saints should praise their King;
How we should join in anthems too,
And heav'nly raptures sing.

3 Darkness retires, the light breaks in, New objects now appear;

Fress onward then, the prize to win,
And cease from ev'ry tear.

4 As sons of light, so let us walk
In wisdom's pleasant ways,
Of Jesu's glories let us talk,
And celebrate his praise.

5 The sun draws near to bless the earth,
Let us no longer lay,
But rise and join the heav'nly mirth,
And bless the Halcyon day.

HYMN CXI. L. M.

The rising empire of God, See Dan. ii. 34, 35.

A PREDICTION.

A. M. SARJENT.

BEHOLD, a wonder in the west!
An object feeble and oppress'd;
Tho' first, in size, appears but small,
It soon exceeds our earthly ball.

2 By worldly wisdom 'tis condemn'd,
And by the aliens much contemn'd,
But quick out-vies the mutt'ring croud,
And brings to silence all the proud.
3 Tho' first, like David's feeble band,
So much despis'd throughout the land,
It rises with increasing strength,
And subjugates the world at length.

4 A rising kingdom here we see,
Tho' first a small fraternity;
