This work contains an apologetical defence" of Pinto, consisting of references to every Portuguese work, and many Latin ones, confirmatory of those circumstances mentioned by him, which were likely to excite amazement or doubt in his readers. And well this was needed, as Cervantes has stigmatized Pinto as "the Prince of Liars," and by another (constantly misquoted as Shakespeare) as "a liar of the first magnitude. Modern travel, however, has done much to recover for Pinto and other early travelers their long-forfeited reputation.

THE EXTREMELY RARE AND PRIVATELY PRINTED ISSUES, the first of which is dated, "D. G. R., 1859.''

This was apparently W. M. Rossetti's copy, as on one of the back fly-leaves he has written the following most interesting note:

"I presume that these two sonnets were printed in about the same number (say 100) as the other privately-printed poems wh. I have mentioned elsewhere—or especially Hand & Soul.'

The fact that each of the 2 Sonnets was printed with a blank page seems to show that from the first Gabriel did not mean them to get published. The reason for excluding from publication the Sonnet on the French Liberation of Italy was that it employs a physical metaphor of a somewhat indecorous kind. The reason for excluding The Mulberry-tree was (as mentioned in Hall Caine's book) that the disparaging reference to 'some tailor' might be regarded with soreness by members of that vocation. W. M.
