One of Bret Harte's inimitable stories, with very many autograph corrections. Accompanying the MS. is a wrapper on which Harte has written: "For Punch Supplement." "4,000 words. Begun Feb. 1, 1900, London: Finished Feb. 14, 1900, Cambridge.' ." Formerly in the collection of Reginald J. Smith, K.C.

"I want to get a copy of 'Cobbett's Rural Rides.' I don't think Quaritch could help me as the book would seem to him vulgarly new.

An interesting letter in which Harte mentions Shakespeare, and White's "Natural History of Selborne."

This letter shows a different phase of Harte from that associated with his writings.

THE EXCESSIVELY RARE FIRST EDITION, OF WHICH PROBABLY NOT MORE THAN TWO PERFECT COPIES ARE KNOWN. The present copy is a beautiful one, with THREE OF THE MARGINS IN UNCUT CONDITION, but with the title in facsimile. There are two copies in the British Museum, both imperfect. This tract was the last of a series of pamphlets in the angry controversy between Harvey and Nash, the publication of any more being prohibited.

Oahu: Paiia I Ka Mea Pai Palapala a Ka Poe Misionari, 1823 EXTREMELY RARE HAWAIIAN IMPRINT, and THE FIRST BOOK PRINTED IN THE HAWAIIAN LANGUAGE. According to Cotton the first book printed here was in 1835, but this volume disproves that statement. The first printing executed in Hawaii was a small tract, in 1821, and this Hymn Book follows shortly after.

It is in fine condition.
