604. VERLAINE (PAUL). A COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL AUTOGRAPH SONNETS AND BALLADS, inlaid, and accompanied mainly with the printed text. Bound in one volume, 4to, full crimson levant morocco, gilt, doublures of blue levant morocco, gilt borders, white moire silk flys, gilt top.

Most of the poems in this collection were written at the Hospitals Broussais and As. de Vincennes. There are included: "Ballade Sappho"; "Ballade de la Mauvaise Reputation"; and Sonnets to Henri Bossanne, A. F. Cazals, Emile Le Brun, Paterne Berrichon, Saint Therese, Ernest Raynaud, etc. Typewritten translations accompany some of the pieces.

UNPUBLISHED MATERIAL, entirely in the handwriting of Verlaine. One of the sheets has many corrections and changes, in pencil, evidently of a different date.

This includes all but the first two numbers of Verlaine's famous work

printed under the title of " 'Élégies." They are all written on the hospital paper during the period when his genius was at his height. The 9 Elegies all bear Verlaine's signature.

608. VERLAINE (PAUL). ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT OF four poems in "Amour." Written on 15 octavo pages, four of which are signed. Bound in full crimson levant morocco, gilt back and sides, inside doublures of blue levant morocco, gilt borders, white moiré silk flys, gilt top.

The volume contains about one-half of the volume entitled "Amour" and comprises: "Bouquet a Marie," 88 lines, written shortly after Verlaine's release from prison in Belgium; "Prière du Matin," 100 lines; "Portrait Official" (Gambetta); printed in Verlaine's Complete Works under the title "Statute pour Tombeau"; "Nebuleuses,'' 14 lines; “Paul Bert," 14 lines; "There," 26 lines; "L'Exile," 10 lines, with pen sketch by Verlaine. Signed by Verlaine with the name "F. Coppée"; "Passage Historique," A VERY EARLY UNPUBLISHED SONNET, and others.
