With the autograph of the Earl of Mar on first title-page. The second part "PLEASANT AND DELIGHTFUL DIALOGUES," is illuminating as regards the customs of the day, and often from its quaintness, very amusing.

THE EXTREMELY RARE FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST PART, and ONE OF THE SCARCEST VOLUMES IN THE WHOLE RANGE OF ELIZABETHAN LITERATURE. It contains nineteen legends, though twenty are mentioned in the table at the end of the volume. It is the legend of "Good duke Humfrey murdered, and Elianor his wife banished" which is omitted. Herbert's description is not correct, and the volume contains 81 leaves, not 92, as stated by Lowndes, he not having noticed the hiatus in the folios.

A SOUND, UNWASHED COPY, with ample margins of the Second Edition of this VALUABLE MONUMENT OF ENGLISH LITERATURE. It is augmented by a second part, which begins at folio lxxxvi with the heading "Wylliam Baldwyn to the Reader." The Preface contains many interesting particulars relating to the authorship of the legends by T. Churchyard, Dolman, F. Seagers, and Cavyl. This edition contains eight additional legends, exclusive of Lord Buckhurst's "Induction."

The tragic end of Clarence, drowned in a butt of Malmesey, is told in the first person.
