SUPERB COPY OF THE FAMOUS TEWRDANNK 783. PFINTZING (MELCHIOR). Die Geuerlicheiten und eins teils der Geschichten des loblichen streitbaren und Hochberumbten Helds und Ritters Tewrdanncks. Printed in large Gothic Letter with enormous flourishes to some of the letters in the first and last lines of the text. Illustrated with 118 large and beau tiful woodcuts of Hunting Scenes, Pageants and Knightly Combats, by Hans Schaufelein. Folio, dark blue morocco, gold panelled sides, with antique ornaments in centres and back panels, gilt edges, by Bedford. Augsburg: Hans Schonsperger, 1519

ONE OF THE RAREST OF THE GREAT ILLUSTRATED WORKS OF THE EARLY SIXTEENTH CENTURY. This famous Metrical Romance of Chivalry, Allegorises the Emperor Maximilian's wedding trip to Burgundy, and, though attributed to Melchior Pfintzing, was to a large extent composed by Maximilian himself. A special fount of type was cut for it by Jost Dienecker of Antwerp, who indulged in such enormous flourishes, chiefly to any g or h which happened to occur in the first and last lines of text in a page, that many eminent printers have imagined that the whole Book was engraved on wood. The splendid woodcuts are each six and a quarter inches high and five and a half inches broad and afford a very rich view of the Costumes and Arms of the times of Maximilian.

784. [PIOZZI (HESTER LYNCH)]. An Attempt to Show How Far the Philosophical Notion of a Plurality of Worlds is Consistent, or not so, with the Language of the Holy Scriptures. 8vo, old half calf. London, 1801

This interesting volume belonged to Johnson's friend, Mrs. Thrale, whose marriage to Mr. Piozzi, a musician, caused the lexicographer so much regret. Mrs. Piozzi has written on a fly-leaf:

"Bought of Bull, at Bath, 5th March, 1802. H. L. Piozzi."

She has written many notes upon the margins. The anonymous author seeks to reconcile astronomy and theology. Mrs. Piozzi loses no opportunity to reprove his impiety. On one page she has written:

"I, H. L. Piozzi, do from my soul abhor and condemn those studies produced from the rotten fruit of the old forbidden tree. We were

sent hither, after Adam's fall, to till the earth and not examine it. Our business is to labor. We are not properly now contemplative beings.''

From the Harry B. Smith Collection.
