This copy has the four mounted plates in the first part of the volume, the distinguishing point of the first issue, and is, moreover, an unusually large and fine copy, with brilliant coloring, and the eight pages of advertisements bound in at end.

EXCESSIVELY RARE NEW HAMPSHIRE ITEM

58. ALLEN (SAMUEL). A Short Narrative of the Claim, Title and Right of the Heirs of the Honourable Samuel Allen, Esq.; Deceased, to the Province of New Hampshire in New England; Transmitted from a Gentlewoman in London, to her friend in New England. 13 pages, 12mo, full levant morocco, by Stikeman.

[Boston, 1728]

The only other known copy of this interesting little pamphlet appears to be the one owned by the Massachusetts Historical Society. In that copy the "Postscript'' of 20 lines is printed on a separate slip which has been added at the back, after the last page, which is blank on the reverse side. From this fact it is evident that the Postscript was an afterthought in the printing and may not have formed part of the original

letter. In the copy we offer for sale the "Postscript" is in a contemporary handwriting, on the reverse of the last leaf. It is quite as possible that this is the original text and that a few copies of it were printed after the pamphlet had been read by someone who realized the necessity for an explanatory appendix.

There is no title-page or imprint on the pamphlet; the place and date probably were taken by Evans from the letter printed on the first page.

60. AMERICAN REVOLUTION. Varick (Richard). Autograph document, 3 pp. 40, unsigned, headed "A supposed state of the Army in Canada, Nov. 25, 1775."

This statement was evidently drawn up by Capt. Richard Varick, then detailed from his command with the first New York Regiment of Continentals, to act as the aide and military secretary of General Philip Schuyler, probably at Ticonderoga. Its great historical interest lies in the fact that it enumerates and summarizes the units of the force of the expedition to Canada under General Benedict Arnold. A list of prisoners taken at Montreal, September 15, 1775, in Varick's hand.
