FIRST EDITION OF BOTH DICKENS AND THACKERAY, as letters of each first appeared in print in this pamphlet, which purports to give a true account of the facts which led to the famous quarrel between the two great novelists. OF GREAT RARITY.

Together with an A. L. S. of Thackeray to W. Harrison Ainsworth, 1 p. 8vo,-"Will you give me your name for the Garrick on Friday at 6, and will you come and dine with me there?-in a humble pigtrot leg-of-mutton way, according to my hymble suckmstanzes,' &c.

Also, an A. L. S. of Dickens to Evans, his publisher, regarding his "Child's History of England"; 2 pp. 8vo; an A. L. S. of Yates, 1 p. 8vo, and portraits of all three authors.

Laid in loosely, is a letter from B. A. Behrend, stating that the drawing was obtained from Lady Ritchie (Thackeray's daughter).

THIS DRAWING IS APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED. It was drawn for "Vanity Fair," but there is no illustration in the published work resembling it.

In the second letter Thackeray writes: "Would I not eat a dinner of herbs and be content? I know they would be excellently cooked. . . . but I have promised to partake of a stalled ox with Sir A. Rothschild.”

This work gives an account of the shameful fraud practiced upon the Indians of Pennsylvania by Governor Thomas Penn, through which the unwitting savages were robbed of over a million acres of land. Endless wars and bloody massacres that devastated the borders of Pennsylvania and Virginia for over twenty years, followed in the train of this dastardly piece of chicanery. Fine copy.

990. THURLOW (EDWARD, 1ST LORD). Lord Chancellor, Opposed Peace with the United States. A lengthy historical A.L.S. to Thomas Townshend, afterwards 1st Viscount Sydney. 6 pp., 4to, 22nd September 1782.

Dealing at great length with the negotiations for peace with America which were then taking place, commenting on Dr. Franklin and Mr. Jay, two of the "Peace" delegates to Paris, and as to the protection of the Loyalists left in the States.

"... Some passages in the former part of his Life and also such parts as I have seen of the late correspondence, have raised unfavorable suspicion of Dr. F.(ranklin) that over-reaching would be deemed an article of merit in this present situation. The arrangements of Mr. Jay for a previous acknowledgment of an independent character appear to me so frivolous, that they also increase my suspicions, and help to fortify the opinion I alluded to before, that if their meaning were fair, the most direct way of coming at it would have been adopted."

Very Scarce. The piece on Tobacco, has a separate title: "a Briefe and Accurate Treatise concerning the taking of the Fume of Tobacco, Which very many, in these dayes, doe too too [sic] licenciously use."

Highly curious and interesting little book. Seventeen different ways are given of preparing and perfuming snuff while the other recipes for per fumes, powders, etc., are very remarkable. In the article "Of Tobacco' it is said "One of the hardest Receipts in Perfumes, is that of Perfuming Tobacco with Flowers."
