THE EXCESSIVELY RARE FIRST EDITION OF WHICH ONLY TWO OTHER COPIES ARE KNOWN. The late Major Lambert believed his copy to be unique and it was thirty years before he was able to procure it. This copy contains sixteen pages of the advertisements of William Taylor & Co., which was lacking in one of the other copies.

VERY FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, with an original cover bound in. The blank leaves contain EIGHTEEN ORIGINAL PEN-AND-INK DRAWINGS of heads in caricature, very much resembling the style of Thackeray himself, and possibly from his pen. Upon one is inscribed "The unhappy Snob" and on another, "S. Mackenna, Sandy Cove" a pun also in Thackeray's vein.

THE RARE EARLIEST ISSUE OF THE FIRST EDITION, with the yellow paper advertisements of the "Latest Works of Mr. Thackeray" and "Works of Leigh Hunt," &c., at beginning and end of each volume; and before the insertion of the "Catalogue of Books published by Smith, Elder & Co.," 16 pages, at the end of Vol. 3. This advertisement was issued in October, 1852, and bears that date on the first page. This copy was presented in that month, and evidently before the advertisement was issued with the usual copies.

The book does not contain the Presentation inscription in the handwriting of Thackeray, but it is recorded in that of the recipient, which fact is explained by the leaf of Dedication where the author says:

"My volumes will reach you when the Author is on his voyage to a country where your name is as well known as here. Wherever I am, I shall gratefully regard you; and shall not be the less welcomed in America because I am your obliged friend and servant,

Together with an A. L. S. of Thackeray to W. Harrison Ainsworth, 1 p. 8vo,-"Will you give me your name for the Garrick on Friday at 6, and will you come and dine with me there?-in a humble pigtrot leg-of-mutton way, according to my hymble suckmstanzes,'' &c.

Also, an A. L. S. of Dickens to Evans, his publisher, regarding his "Child's History of England"; 2 pp. 8vo; an A. L. S. of Yates, 1 p. Svo, and portraits of all three authors.

Laid in loosely, is a letter from B. A. Behrend, stating that the drawing was obtained from Lady Ritchie (Thackeray's daughter).

THIS DRAWING IS APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED. It was drawn for “Vanity Fair," but there is no illustration in the published work resembling it.

This work gives an account of the shameful fraud practiced upon the Indians of Pennsylvania by Governor Thomas Penn, through which the unwitting savages were robbed of over a million acres of land. Endless wars and bloody massacres that devastated the borders of Pennsylvania and Virginia for over twenty years, followed in the train of this dastardly piece of chicanery. Fine copy.
