Laid in loosely, is a letter from B. A. Behrend, stating that the drawing was obtained from Lady Ritchie (Thackeray's daughter). THIS DRAWING IS APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED. Some passages in the former part of his Life and also such parts as I have seen of the late correspondence, have raised unfavorable suspicion of Dr. F.(ranklin) that over-reaching would be deemed an article of merit in this present situation. The arrangements of Mr. Jay for a previous acknowledgment of an independent character appear to me so frivolous, that they also increase my suspicions, and help to fortify the opinion I alluded to before, that if their meaning were fair, the most direct way of coming at it would have been adopted." 991.
