lum. He is represented holding the tablets containing the Commandments. The figure has a circular nimbus in brilliant gold. Moses is represented as a blonde, with the horns usually (and erroneously) shown in portraits of him made by medieval artists. He is clothed in a brilliant scarlet robe edged with brown fur. The tablets are in a brilliant blue, bearing the Commandments in the Dutch language in Gothic. The background is brown, with brilliant green tracery. The portrait is enclosed in a frame of bright gold, which is surrounded by a floriated border in red, blue, pink and gold. The miniature is of the best Flemish execution, and is of particular interest as having probably been painted soon. after the death of the brothers Van Eyck, who were natives of Maeseyck, especially as the general style is similar to the few works known to have been painted by Jan Van Eyck. The paper on which the manuscript is written shows two watermarks: one, the unicorn, the other, the Gothic initial letter P, surmounted by a quatrefoil. Maeseyck, circa 1475

647. MANUSCRIPT of the XVth Century. Lectionary written on vellum. 170 leaves including one blank, double columns, 29 lines to a page. Decorated with several hundred painted initials in blue and red, with border scrolls, and 5 larger initials in gold and colors, the latter with elaborate border decorations of great lelicacy and beauty, the text throughout copiously emphasized in red. Small 8vo (41/4 x 6 inches), old half calf, gilt, marbled paper sides. Saec. XV

A very desirable example of the 15th century workmanship, and apparently quite perfect. The decorations are of great beauty and delicacy. With ample margins and in excellent state of preservation.

648. MANUSCRIPT. L'Office de l'Eglise contenant Le Petit Office de la Vierge, les Sept Pseaumes Penitentiaux, et l'Office des Morts, et autres Priereu. Written on 175 vellum leaves; the Calendar in red, blue and gold. With 6 miniatures, representing the Angel's visit to Mary, the Visit of the Wise Men, David praying, John the Baptist in the Wilderness, etc. Nine of the pages are within a full illuminated border of flowers, fruits, scrolls and araDesque designs, and the remaining pages have similar illuminations either on one or both sides of the text. 12mo, full old calf, gilt back, gilt panelled sides, with the symbol of the flame in compartnents, and at the corners of the panels, gilt edges. A VERY BEAUTIFUL MANUSCRIPT, the miniatures, both large and small, being choice specimens of the work of this period. The large paintings include the Revelation to St. John, Christ praying in the Garden, the Annunciation, the Crucifixion, Christ at Bethlehem, the announcement to the Shepherds, the Visit of the Wise Men, the Flight into Egypt, ete. Among the smaller miniatures are: Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke, Jacob, Sebastian, Nicholas, Anna, Mary Magdalene, Katherine, Margaret, and

others.

The delicate execution and brilliant coloring of this handsome manuscript show that it was executed by an artist of great merit.

The Saints in the Calendar comprise: Saint Genevieve (Jan. 3), St. Vincent (Jan. 22), St. Gertrude (March 12), St. Boniface (May 14), St. Bartholomew (Aug. 24), Katherine virginis (Nov. 25), Silvestre pape. (Dec. 31).
